Replacement Overpass

Project Company Max J. Kuney Company
Problem The project involved installing sheet piling only 2' from a major 20" water main.  the proximity of the water main to the project created concern over vibration during driving.
Solution

The first hammer tried was the an MKT V5, which failed to drive the sheets.  An ICE 416L could drive the sheets, but particle velocities in the 0.4-0.5 in/sec range were measured during start-up and shut-down (0.3 during driving).

As work got closer to the pipeline, an ICE 223 high frequency vibrator (2300 vpm) was brought in on trial.  the 223 drove the sheets about as well as the 416 and, more importantly, peak particle velocities were only 0.1-0.2 in/sec (0.1 during driving).

Result Because the ICE 223 vibrator requires the same 325 HP as the ICE 416L but with half the eccentric moment (1100 in-lbs vs. 2200)and runs faster (2300 vpm vs. 1600vpm).  the higher frequency of the 223 results in lower transmitted vibration for sensitive jobs.
What the Client Says "The ICE 223 high frequency vibrator saved me $1220 per day by eliminating the need for a man on site to monitor vibration."
