Environmental Cleanup with an ICE 33 Vibratory Pile Hammer

Editor Alix Bemis

J. Fletcher Creamer & Son is a nationally recognized top infrastructure contractor serving businesses, government agencies & utility companies.

As part of an environmental cleanup project at an old factory site in Jersey City, NJ, they drove up to 40' long PZ-27 and AZ-40 sheeting for cofferdams using the ICE® Model 33 Vibratory Pile Driver and Extractor (also known as a Pile Hammer).

Among the many vibratory hammers that at J. Fletcher Creamer & Son have rented from ICE®, they loved the performance and lighter weight of the ICE® Model 33 Vibratory Pile Driver and Extractor.

Building Bridges over The railroads

Northland Rivergate Overcrossing Construction

Editor: Alix Bemis

The Portland Bureau of Transportation's (PBOT) $25.8 million Northland Rivergate Overcrossing project began in October 2019. Cascade Bridge LLC was awarded the contract to build the bridge that spans the Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF tracks. The five-span bridge will be 830-feet long and will replace a crossing on North Rivergate Boulevard. The purpose of this project is to ease traffic congestion and long backups caused by rail switching operations.

Founded in 2001, Cascade Bridge LLC is a heavy-highway general contractor that specializes in bridge construction primarily in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

To protect nearby businesses, the new overpass required deep and high-capacity piles with a net zero settlement impact. The first step is driving 12,000 feet of 25"x0.625" pipe pile using an ICE® 1-80v2 Diesel Impact Pile Hammer in ICE® 48" Offshore Leads with their 130T crawler and Link-Belt 228 HSL.

The new Northland Rivergate Overcrossing will be complete in May 2021 and expected to open to traffic in June 2021.

Building a Bronx Bridge

Unionport Constructors Work on the Unionport Bridge Project

Editor Alix Bemis

Unionport Constructors working on Zerega Avenue for the Bronx's Unionport Bridge Project are driving H-Beams, Pipe, and Sheet Pile using an ICE® Model 14 Vibratory Driver & Extractor, ICE® Model 28 Vibratory Driver & Extractor, ICE® Model 44 Vibratory Driver & Extractor, along with an ICE® Pilemer Model IP3 Hydraulic Impact Hammer. In this extremely busy urban area, Unionport Bridge had to remain open to both boat and vehicle traffic during construction.

On an average weekday, over 60,000 vehicles cross the bridge. DOT's $226 million reconstruction of the Unionport Bridge consists of construction of a temporary bridge, followed by a full demolition and replacement of the movable bridge itself as well as its approach spans and roadways from Zerega Avenue to Brush Avenue. The new bridge will also include separated bike and pedestrian paths from the roadway to improve safety. Construction is expected to be completed by 2021.

Although the construction crew faced challenges such as an extremely congested construction site and a very small build area, they were able to successfully drive the H-Beams, Pipe, and Sheet Pile using an assortment of ICE® pile driving construction equipment.
