14D Ease of Installation for new Billboard

Editor: Debbie Reaney

Diamond Electric has been installing billboards with the assistance of an ICE® Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor all over the state of Florida.  Based out of Sanford, just north of Orlando, the company specializes in sign and lighting installations; mostly those of the billboard and advertising variety.  Once they began using the ICE® vibratory pile driver/extractor for the foundation pipe pile installation, Diamond Electric Signs and Lighting knew it was a game changer.

Due to various soil conditions of the area and the sometimes-unusual location placement of the billboards, many different hammer types have been utilized by Diamond dependent on the job.  For the current install of a 30" x 60' caisson pile in a tight space between two commercial buildings, the customer was advised that the small, but mighty, ICE® 14D Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor would have enough driving force to get the job done; and would be able to do it without disrupting business in the two commercial spaces.

Thanks to the quick driving capabilities the vibratory hammer was able to perform, the two Orlando businesses were able to operate as usual throughout the installation process. We are grateful to Diamond Electric Signs & Lighting for allowing ICE® to provide the equipment that proved the cost efficiency of a driven pile foundation, while at the same time helping to support the local small business community!

Editor: Debbie Reaney

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest, most destructive, and strongest hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season. It completely devastated the Northeast region, particularly New York City, its suburbs, and Long Island. Sandy's impacts included the flooding of the New York City Subway system, of many suburban communities, and of all road tunnels entering Manhattan except the Lincoln Tunnel. Forty-Four individuals lost their lives and $19 Million in damages to homes, were just two of the dreadful aftermaths of the storm. New York City quickly got to work to create a plan to safeguard the coast from future flooding. The East Side Coastal Resiliency Project aims to offer protection to significant infrastructure and to keep 110,000 lives safe with the creation of a 2.4-mile flood plan including floodgates and floodwalls built right into the fabric of the community.

Portions of the foundation work for the ESCR were completed by Posillico Inc. While working under the FDR Bridge, on the east side of Manhattan, Posillico Civil Atlantic Pile JV encountered a few unique job challenges. Understanding how to select the proper equipment can make or break the project; with this in mind the industry experts at Posillico Civil Atlantic Pile JV turned to ICE® to provide the proper drill and tooling equipment to accomplish the work. By purchasing and utilizing a Comacchio MC8D drill rig, Tecniwell TW700 Jet Grout, and Tecniwell TWM40 Grout Mixing Plant, PCAP JV was able to fill in foundation holes with the rig. After sheet piles were driven, the high-power jet grout pump plugs any gaps surrounding the piles. This method allows for a strong driven pile foundation which is finished off by the grout. The Comacchio MC8D, a versatile and powerful hydraulic drilling rig, designed for civil engineering works such as micropiles, anchors and ground improvement in general will be used throughout the job for many different applications, as the scope of the project is so vast.

The East Side Coastal Resiliency Project will ensure a future that is flood free, thanks to strong foundations that are put in place by this team of engineers and construction experts. Congratulations to Posillico Civil Atlantic Pile JV on the purchase of a new MC8D Comacchio drill rig and jet grouting tools. ICE® is proud to provide your team with the equipment necessary to complete this job quickly and safely.

Removing The Dam Piles

Editor: Debbie Reaney

The Verde River near Clarksdale, AZ once again flows freely, thanks to the removal of a 100-year-old dam.  Built in 1914, the Clarkdale Dam was placed to separate the water into Peck's Lake from the Verde River, the water was then used by the United Verde Copper Company's smelting plant.  The Copper Plant was closed in the 1950s, however, the dam remained to preserve the artificial reservoir at Peck's Lake.  In February of 2019, the dam sustained a huge storm ripped a 30-foot breach in the dam sending 15,000 cubic feet per second of water down the Verde River.

The company who is responsible for the upkeep of the Clarkdale Dam, Freeport- McMoRan was making plans for the removal at the time of the breach.  Once the storm had done it's damage the company called in Keller North America to help in the further removal of the 320-ft long sheet wall that had created the original structure.  Sheet had been driven about 20 feet into the ground to create the retaining wall.

Keller North America was working on soft riverbed conditions, fighting against timing and environmental conditions.  The work had to be completed in between January and March, as this is when the tide was the lowest, so as not to affect the wildlife in the area.  Also, the pulling of the sheets had to be done without adding any fill into the river, creating a sensitive jobsite for a working platform.

Having worked with the ICE® Team on numerous jobsites, Keller knew that the sensitive nature of this project called for the proper equipment to finesse the sheets from the ground.  ICE® was able to provide the 22 Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor fitted with an ICE® Dampener to help ensure the safest operations for the crew and crane in these soft soil conditions.  The equipment on site was so successful that there were no safety issues throughout the whole process, thanks to proper equipment sizing and education.

Now that the Verde River has been restored to the natural flow endangered fish, like the Colorado pike-minnow, are thriving in the river.  Keller and ICE® worked together to remove 105 year old damaged sheet piling, safely so that nature can take her course and restore the beautiful Verde River and her inhabitants.

ICE® 44B Drives for Garden State Parkway Improvements

Editor: Debbie Reaney

Construction is underway on the widening of the Garden State Parkway in Clifton, NJ.  Also known as US Route 46, this is one of fourteen ventures which is a part of a much larger $24 billion capital improvement project put together by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.  These improvement plans are aimed at creating safer roadways, with wider lanes, shoulders, and approach entrances.

IEW Construction Group has been awarded the US Route 46, Passaic Bridge, and River Drive portion of the project.  The widening of lanes will call for excavation systems for two abutments and three retaining walls.  Realizing the need for proper foundation equipment to perform the driving of sheet piles, IEW turned to the professionals at ICE® to provide the equipment needed for the job.  The use of the superstar ICE® 44B Vibratory Driver/Extractor will allow IEW to quickly place sheet piles to create the necessary retaining walls.

Relying on the superior driving power of the 44B, IEW understands the need for reliable equipment to successfully drive piles to grade in a timely manner.  This large project will be completed in phases, with all work set to be finished by 2026.

IEW Construction Group and ICE® will continue to work together throughout the project, ensuring that the roads in New Jersey are safer for all who traverse them.

I-19_LucasBros_AllentownPA
Editor: Debbie Reaney

A major access route to the NJ Turnpike, I-95 and northern Ocean County is in the process of receiving a facelift. Sharon Station Road, in Allentown, NJ, will be wider, safer, and more beautiful once construction is completed. The replacement of 3 bridges, the addition of a roundabout, and the widening of the road, all complete with landscaping upgrades, will turn this stretch of well-traveled road into an efficient and scenic way to traverse this portion of New Jersey.

Monmouth County has awarded this $18 million dollar project to Lucas Brothers Construction.   The Lucas Brothers, with more than 20 years of experience, knew exactly who to partner with to perform the foundation work needed for such a vast project.  Calling on the experts at ICE®, Lucas Brothers was equipped with an ICE® I-19 Diesel Impact Hammer and an ICE® 44B Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor.  These two machines, working together, were able to accomplish all necessary driven pile work on this project.  The ICE® I-19 Diesel Impact was used to drive steel pipe piles for the reconstructed bridges, while the ICE® 44B Vibratory drove sheeting piles for the widening of the road.

The professionals at Lucas Brothers understood that sometimes, 2 pieces of equipment is better than 1!  By working both ICE® hammers on the Sharon Station Road job, the customer was able to efficiently drive the piles to grade and move quickly and effortlessly to the next phase of construction.  ICE® feels privileged to be allowed to assist Lucas Brothers Construction to get traffic moving throughout the New Jersey area!

ICE® 50B is Worth Its Salt

Editor: Debbie Reaney

Just offshore of Cleveland, Ohio, over 1,800 ft below Lake Erie, lies an incredible feat of engineering.  The Cargill's Salt Mines are 12 square miles of tunnels which provide 4 million tons of rock salt during the winter months.  Ohio is the 5th largest producer of rock salt in the country, with the Cleveland mine producing the most in the state.

Once the salt is mined from below the lake, it is brought up to factories where it is processed on conveyer belts.  After the processing is complete it is shipped out via the docks that are attached to the Cargill Operation.  Some of these docks are in disrepair.  That is where Great Lakes Construction was able to step in to offer some pile driving expertise.

Great Lakes Construction was met with a hard deadline to install temporary 13 24" diameter by 70' long fender piles at the dock prior to the first ship of the season arriving.

Understanding that the correct equipment would be essential in keeping to a tight schedule, Great Lakes looked to the experts at ICE®.  ICE® was able to provide a 50B Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor.  Purchasing the pile driver with a sheeting clamp, Great Lakes quickly realized they would need a beam and clamps to be able to properly install the pipe piles for the fender piles.  The ICE® team was able to quickly deliver the necessary beam and clamps.

The tenured relationship between ICE® and Great Lakes Construction allowed both companies to deliver on promises to their respective clientele.

Congratulations to Great Lakes Construction, on the purchase of the ICE® 50B Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractor!
