Dundalk Marine Terminal is Efficiency Bound

Dundalk Marine Terminal is Efficiency Bound

Editor: Allison Braswell

The 570-acre Dundalk Marine Terminal is the largest and most versatile cargo facility at the Port of Baltimore, it is also one of the top 10 busiest terminals in the nation. It is not unusual for semi-trailer truck drivers to wait for up to eight hours to pick up shipping containers that cargo ships unload onto the terminal due to the sheer volume housed on every vessel. Not only does the heavy traffic pose dangers on the road, but the old age of the bridge also raises concerns for overall public safety.

Baltimore City Department of Transportation (BCDOT), in partnership with the Secretary's Office of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland Port Administration (MPA) decided that the best solution was to start fresh with a new bridge. The replacement of this functionally obsolete bridge on Broening Highway over Colgate Creek, will enable trucks to reroute away from residential communities, addressing major impacts upon residents' quality of life, and allow them to access I-95 more efficiently and safely.

Allan Myers Construction was awarded the contract for this critical infrastructure plan and utilized the combined the power of ICE®'s vibratory hammers and ICE diesel impact hammers to replace the first portion of the two-lane bridge with a new four-lane bridge. After one side of the old bridge was demolished, the team pre-set the 46" (inch) diameter caissons needed for the new foundation using the ICE® 44E Vibratory Driver/Extractor. The next portion of driving was left up to both the ICE® I-80 and the ICE® I-125 Diesel Impact Hammers dependent on the soil and driving conditions. Completion for this project is currently estimated for Spring 2024.

Once the new bridge is completely installed, the port will be able to better manage global supply chain challenges and move goods more proactively, shortening the time for trucks to get in and out of the port when these mega ships are unloaded. Thank you to Allan Myers for trusting ICE®'s vibratory and diesel equipment to help boost efficiency and safety near the nation's busiest port for automobiles and Ro/Ro cargo ships.

Biotech is Booming in Boston

Biotech is Booming in Boston

Editor: Allison Braswell

Boston is the nation's center for RNA and DNA research, and a new facility with supersized lab space is about to make way for more talent in the area. Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. is investing $700 million to lease a 334,000-square-foot genetic medicinal research lab which will be located inside a 12-story all-inclusive building on the Boston Seaport. The Eli Lilly Institute of Genetic Medicine will focus on developing RNA-based medicines, gene therapies, and other treatments that address the root cause of human diseases. The facilities will include not only lab areas but shops, dining, and public entertainment space for the over 250 employees, visitors and locals projected to frequent the facility.

J.F. White Contracting was hired to begin construction of the project at 15 Necco Steet in 2021. As removal of the previously paved parking lot was underway, large timber piles and debris was found. After some digging into historical records, it was discovered that the area was once part of Boston Harbor prior to its "filling in" in the 1860s. An ICE® Model 55 Wood Clamp paired with the ICE® 28B Vibratory Driver/Extractor was used to pull the extensive debris and nearly 300 wood pilings from the area. Once accomplished, J.F. White then selected the ICE® IP-7 Hydraulic Impact Hammer to install the foundation for the complex driving approximately 200 tons of 90" (feet) H beams.

The Institute is expected to open in 2024. Thank you to J.F. White for trusting the ICE® team to supply a variety of deep foundation equipment that will help establish a new laboratory in Massachusetts' biotech hub.

International Construction Equipment, Inc, ICE®, is honored to contribute to a project that will in the end help to silence disease-causing genes.

I-95 Billboard Driven in Minutes

Editor: Allison Braswell

Ultra-Lum Services has selected to use ICE®'s reliable vibratory driving solutions for the installation of a digital billboard in New Haven, CT. Ultra-Lum, hired by OUTFRONT Media, was contracted to install a billboard foundation made up of a single 48" (inches) caisson, which is 108' (feet) in length. This billboard is one of many being placed along the I-95 corridor. ICE® team is proud to announce our 33rd project with Ultra-Lum and one of several jobs completed for their media client.

The team used the ICE® 110C Vibratory Hammer to drive the caisson 94' (feet). Due to its magnificent height, a drone was utilized to give bystanders a bird's eye view of the exciting process while showing the billboard will not present as an obstruction. Drilling methods used for billboard installations add days to these types of jobs, but the ICE® 110C installed this caisson smoothly in just over 7 minutes. Typical billboard installation occurs in some of the toughest driving conditions including contaminated soils with obstructions and tight spaces near busy highways. This powerful package makes easy work no matter the soil conditions or obstacles.

Thank you to Ultra-Lum for their use of ICE® vibratory equipment as the preferred method for quick and safe billboard installation. ICE®'s vibratory hammers are designed to safely get the job done. In this case, we were able to provide a deep foundation method that will ensure resistance against strong weather and wind conditions.

GROUP brings Power to Thousands

GROUP brings Power to Thousands
Editor: Debbie Reaney

Entergy Louisiana is constructing a new substation and distribution circuits in Calcasieu Parish as part of its commitment to increasing the resilience of the electric system and providing customers with reliable power. The approximately $24 million project will benefit thousands of customers in the Gillis, Moss Bluff and north and east Lake Charles areas.

To help with the construction of this new substation Entergy selected locally based GROUP Contractors, out of Baton Rouge. Because GROUP is committed to staying on top of the latest technologies and techniques in their field of deep foundations and construction, their decision to work with ICE®'s continuous flight auger specialists was an easy choice. ICE® is dedicated as the one-stop foundation shop to offer a solution for every soil type and situation.

The average drilled CFA pile in Louisiana is 24" (inches) in diameter, yet for this project a variety of 30- and 36-inch diameter shafts with various depths averaging 35' (feet) and some as deep as 90' (feet) were required. GROUP's expertise was tested yet again with the uncommonly tougher soil in this LA area.

Geotechnical soil boring indicated that the ICE ®HB85, known for its extensive drilling capacity and torque range, would handle this job with power to spare. However, the engineers at GROUP quickly reached out to their team in the field to learn more about these ultra-stiff soil conditions.   It was determined that the premier ICE® 115-50, designed to provide ultimate flexibility, would offer maximum benefit to the varied sized CFA installs.

Splendid work to the foundation experts at GROUP. Knowing what your needs are to accomplish a job quickly and safely is paramount. ICE® is proud to have their equipment and rental fleet working on projects that help to ensure the reliability of energy to Louisiana area residents. Thank you for choosing our team, we look forward to continuing to build our relationship.

Keeping The Water at Bay in Philadelphia

Placing the sheet pile with ICE 44D VibroKeeping The Water at Bay in Philadelphia
Editor: Allison Braswell

A variety of piers over the Delaware River waterfront in Northern Philadelphia make the perfect recreational spots for area locals and visitors alike. Some of the most popular activities include catch and release fishing, live concerts, and taking in views of the river. Recent environmental changes, like the current rise in global sea levels, make it difficult to keep these spaces safe for the public and open year-round. With the 10% increase in precipitation in Pennsylvania since the early 1900s, sea level in this area has risen at an average rate of about 2.93 mm (about 0.12 in) a year. This can result in coastal erosion and floods that pose threats to both people and properties. The City of Philadelphia decided to implement a proactive approach in taking control of the tidal flow.

R.E. Pierson was selected to reconstruct a sheet metal seawall. Utilizing the ICE® 44 Vibratory Pile Driver, the team successfully drove over 65' (feet) of sheet pile, securing the shoreline to protect Philadelphia's attractions, residents, and tourists. This retaining wall will be secured for many years to come due to the overall 180 tons of driving force used to install. R.E. Pierson is recognized by the community for the outstanding commitment to protecting their assets.

ICE® is proud to have been chosen to assist R.E. Pierson. Their work on environmental projects like this one decreases the harsh effects of climate change in this increasingly wet world!

ICE® Engineering: 20-years and counting

Editor: Debbie Reaney

After earning his master's degree in mechanical engineering, Michael Douglas was asked to join our team as an apprentice working under the pile driving master, Tony Last. In 2000, over twenty years ago, Douglas was assigned into a full-time staff engineering role.

As quality began to slip at J&M Foundation Equipment, LLC, on the ICE® smaller vibratory product line and manufacturing was increasing in the Matthews, NC facility, Douglas and C. Cunningham (CEO) developed a plan to move all machine shop production and manufacturing production into Matthew's NC headquarters. Douglas remembers the sense of relief now being able to focus on quality improvements and less on coordination of parts and pieces for assembly. "We took a huge step forward in our client offerings... outstanding production maneuverability to handle custom setups, faster parts turnaround with online ordering and excelled with our new testing procedures." Douglas wore many hats during this transition and was extremely focused on optimizing ICE®'s manufacturing by enabling solutions that included engineering with similar and universal part replacements.

Using over-engineered parts as part of our standardization, Douglas has lowered costs for ICE® clients while influencing service efficiency.  After moving manufacturing into the home office, ICE® continued to make strides by expanding with a new and vast machine shop, further enhancing quality of parts and customization abilities. "It is much easier to talk to the team face to face and put your hands on the equipment than to head off premise to another facility," Douglas explains.

Over the course of his 20-year career at ICE®, Douglas has contributed to the way we all drive pile. His ingenuity is displayed in all our innovative and cost-effective methods and equipment. Our team feels his impact everyday as he fluently works with suppliers, ICE® team innovation leaders and our clients to produce efficient and effective tools specific to the deep foundation industry in its entirety. "Our team is the key factor in what differentiates ICE® from others in this industry and we believe this is central to our advancement," C. Cunningham, CEO, explains. "Thank you, Mr. Douglas, for your years of service. Here is a "hats-off" to you and many more innovations."

We are proud to have Michael Douglas leading our engineers into the deep foundation future.

Congratulations on your 20 years!

Creating Safer Recreational Grounds in Lower Manhattan

Creating Safer Recreational Grounds in Lower Manhattan

Editor: Allison Braswell

As sea levels are on the rise due to coastal storms and other threats posed by climate change, the City of New York is taking action to protect parks, neighborhoods, and vegetation across 2.4 miles of Manhattan's East Side against storm damage and flooding. Beginning in Fall 2020, the $1.45-billion East Side Coastal Resiliency Project involves elevating East River Park, installing flood walls, and reconstructing the waterfront bulkhead to enhance flood resiliency. Construction is expected to continue through 2026.

Gateway Demo/Civil Corp. out of Hicksville, NY is one out of many contractors selected to work on this project. They are driving H-Beams for the park's reconstructed and reconfigured outfall system, which will reroute more storm drainage on the western, residential side of the park. When it came time to select proper equipment to drive the H-piles, ICE® supplied Gateway with the 22 Vibratory Pile Driver to drive the piles 10 feet underground. Additionally, ICE®'s I-12 Diesel Hammer succeeded at further driving the piles to the desired parameter that will allow for a drainage pipe to be laid on top, which will direct storm drainage into the river.

Building the foundation for this piece of the puzzle has only just begun and ICE® looks forward to being a part of the team that will create a beautiful new public recreational space for the residents of Lower Manhattan. Thank you, Gateway Demo/Civil Corp, for choosing ICE® to supply equipment needed for this venture.

Bridge construction team reinvents mobility and driven pile control

Editor: Debbie Reaney

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., based out of Wilmington, NC, was awarded a new project in July 2021 on behalf of Effingham County and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to help increase residential and business access to the rapidly growing Rincon community. Selected due to their past work with GDOT infrastructure projects across the state, including Harry S. Truman Parkway Phase V, King George Boulevard, Back River Bridge, SR 540 Fall Line Freeway and Jimmy Deloach Parkway; construction began in September 2021 and is scheduled for completion in April 2025.

The Effingham Parkway Extension will include the development of a new, six-mile, two-lane roadway which will extend from State Route 30 to Blue Jay Road in Effingham County. This project will also include six bridges, two Cast-in-Place (CIP) box culverts and 861 55-foot 18-inch concrete piles, to support the bridge structures. To maximize productivity and costs, Balfour Beatty decided to implement a fixed lead set-up, enabling one crew to produce twice the results. Not only is this unusual in bridge work, but it was also the first time that the contractor had used a fixed lead system. In this instance, the standard 2-axis set-up with an ICE® I-30 Diesel was not ideal; thus, the ICE® engineers were tasked with designing a 3-axis set-up that would attach the ICE® Fixed Leads system and ICE® Model-155 Hydraulic Spotter to Balfour Beatty's existing crane. The 3-axis system allowed for the fixed leads to rotate 30° to either side and gave the crew more versatility when placing the hammer. An efficient, productive lead set-up with full mobility is key to a profitable pile driving operation as it enables the contractor faster hammer placement.

ICE® proudly services, sells and rents a full line of deep foundation equipment, leads and accessories to meet a wide variety of job requirements. In addition, ICE® engineers and production are fully qualified to design and build specialized equipment in our Matthews, NC facility meeting unique and difficult job specifications. Experienced ICE® team members are available to fit the customized components to achieve the optimum results for each job. We are pleased that Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. understands the importance of innovative designs and thank them for their belief in our team.

Congratulations Rick Sadler! 20 years with ICE®

ICE® 20-years of Service
~ Rick Sadler ~

Rick Sadler is a valuable team member, trainer, innovator, and friend to all who know him. ICE® is thankful and proud of his service within the ICE® New Jersey Service, Sales & Rentals Branch for over 20 years.

"Since I was 10 years old and was allowed to ride the crane hook from the bridge to the barge, I knew I would work in the pile driving industry," Sadler explained. "There was never a dull moment shadowing with my dad. He knew how to make visiting his clients exciting for a young boy." Sadler spent a generous portion of his adolescence learning as much as he could about the industry. He often joined his father on the jobsite and began honing his craft as a draftsman, hand-drafting drawings of pile hammers with vellum paper and a pencil. At 16 years old, Rick started his own pile driving business selling hammers in the Caribbean. By 18 years old, he was paying his way through college at the University of North Florida. Following college, Sadler decided to take his contractor hat off to begin an equipment sales career to assist clients in the pile driving industry.

In 2000, Sadler joined the ICE® Team as Regional Sales and Service Manager in the northeast USA and has grown into a remarkably dedicated trainer; teaching and developing those around him. When asked about how he felt about his team at ICE®, Rick stated that he believes the wonderful thing about it is the camaraderie and dependability. "Over the years at ICE®," he continues, "I have seen a lot of people working hard to accomplish really remarkable things for the driven pile industry and they do this by focusing on client needs. You know this work is in good faith as they are genuinely good, honest people--family. My family."

ICE® is grateful for Sadler's commitment to his team, loyalty to his colleagues, and diligence in his vested interest. "The combination of skills and willingness to share these skills and knowledge make Rick Sadler an inspiration to others in our industry", Pollyanna Cunningham, Director of Marketing, Brand & Media Relations, said. "Rick has a true passion for helping people, sharing his knowledge, and telling really great stories along the way."

Congratulations on 20 years, Rick!
