ICE® 18EC Keeps it Cool in Peru
October 23, 2024
Constructora M&S S.A.C, based in Peru, is the main contractor for the ambitious Lima Infrastructure Development Project. This project aims to enhance the city's foundational support structures, ensuring long-term stability and growth for the region. Constructora M&S S.A.C is responsible for overseeing the entire construction process, including the foundational support structures. This project is a significant step towards improving infrastructure and promoting sustainable development in the region.
Overseen by a collaboration between local authorities and international engineering firms, this project's primary goal is to build robust and reliable foundational support structures to enhance the region's infrastructure while simultaneously protecting the local environment and supporting the area's economy.
Planning for this monumental task was completed in early 2023, involving detailed site assessments and environmental impact studies. ICE® 44 Secures Slope Seamlessly
October 15, 2024
Francis J. Palo, Inc. (Palo) is a construction company based in Clarion, Pennsylvania. Established in 1954, they offer a wide range of construction services to federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as private corporations. Their expertise includes heavy, civil, and industrial construction. Recently, Palo was selected to work on a roadway slope stabilization project in Titusville, PA for local government authorities. Francis J. Palo, Inc. often collaborates with municipal governments to address infrastructure needs and ensure public safety like this project which focused on addressing and mitigating slope instability issues that were affecting the roadway. Palo's plan of action involved several key activities including excavation and grading to reshape the slope and ensure proper drainage, installation of a permanent retaining structure, erosion control measures, and drainage improvements; all aimed at improving the safety and longevity of the roadway and ensuring its stability and security for the long term.
For the pile portion of this undertaking, the experts at Palo chose to use a rented ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammer to place the 25'(ft) long PZ40 rolled steel sheets used in a prior project to grade to create the retaining wall that will provide lateral support and resist soil movement, acting as shear dowels across the slip plane and helping to stabilize the slope. These sheets, part of the PZ series, are known for their durability and the unique "ball and socket" interlock system. This interlock system allows for flexibility in installation, enabling the sheets to form tight curves and maintain a strong, watertight barrier.
The slope stabilization project in Titusville faced several challenges, as coordinating the delivery and use of materials and equipment in a timely manner was essential to maintain project momentum. Due to work restrictions, Palo was required to close and reopen the lane daily. Meaning that Palo's crews had to set up and breakdown their entire operation each morning and evening- all while minimizing traffic disruption and maintaining safety standards. According to the Palo project manager, the use of the ICE®44 Vibratory Hammer was crucial for driving piles into the ground efficiently. This hammer is designed to handle a variety of pile types, including sheet, pipe, timber, and concrete piles, as well as caissons and beams and operates within a frequency range of 600 to 1,200 vpm, which helps achieve maximum pile penetration rates in different soil conditions. Palo chose this powerful piece of equipment knowing that it would be able to keep up with all the sheet piling the team could set in one day, thus enabling their crews to be off the road and open the lane back up in the evening.
These challenges required innovative solutions and meticulous planning to successfully complete the project. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) applauds the entire Frances J Palo team for their dedication to safety and implementation of skill. The citizens of Titusville are sure to be thankful for the improved security of this much traveled roadway.

Taproot ~ Connecting Charlotte Communities
October 2, 2024Segment 09, also known as the Orr Road to Rocky River Road West stretch, is a two-mile addition to the existing greenway that spans 30 plus miles between Pineville and the Cabarrus County line. It is part of the ambitious Cross Charlotte Trail Project currently under construction in Charlotte, NC. When completed, a delightful network of trails for walkers, joggers, and cyclists will have been created. However, this trail won't just be a scenic route--it will also connect to nearby amenities giving locals and visitors easy access to various charming parks, a cozy café, and even a friendly dog park.
Taproot Construction is a specialty contractor responsible for the construction of two pile and panel retaining walls being built along the Cross Charlotte Trail Segment 09 project. Taproot, known for their expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly in urban environments, began their part of the work on the trail in July 2024 and aim to wrap up within the next few weeks. With the challenges of limited access, varying soil conditions, and groundwater Taproot's expert team has been able to remain on time and budget, while simultaneously prioritizing safety for both their workers and the public by implementing rigorous safety protocols and regular inspections.
For their portion of this project, Taproot rented a Comacchio CH450 from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) citing the competitive rental rate, rig availability, minimal transportation costs, and the ability to use segmental casing if needed. This versatile drilling rig is suitable for large-diameter drilling, making it ideal for such a large-scale infrastructure project, paired with its ability to be transported and assembled on site- making it the ideal choice for this limited access area. Using the CH450, Taproot's hardworking team drilled 30" (in) diameter holes to the required depth for the two permanent soldier piles and precast panel walls. Once the holes were drilled, steel H-piles (soldier piles) were placed into the holes and then filled with concrete. This process ensures the stability and durability of the retaining wall. After the concrete cured, precast concrete panels were installed between the soldier piles forming the visible face of the retaining wall and providing additional support.
Once this segment of the trail is finished in its entirety, sometime in 2027, it will connect to nearby amenities, making it easier for residents to access parks, schools, and shopping areas and is designed to be accessible for all, including pedestrians, cyclists, and those with mobility challenges. Enhanced lighting and clear signage will be installed to ensure the safety of all trail users and includes spaces for community events and activities, fostering a sense of community among trail users. According to the City of Charlotte website, 140,000 residents and 130,000 jobs will be within walking distance of the proposed trail and connecting greenways, making this a huge bonus to the area. Taproot is doing a fantastic job on this integral piece of trail expansion right in our own community. We at ICE® are thankful to be a part of the creation and growth potential that this project has instore for Mecklenburg County!
So, whether you're lacing up your sneakers or dusting off your bike, get ready to explore Charlotte's trails. And remember, every step you take brings us closer to a healthier, happier community!
