Transforming Montevideo Port: The Cuenca del Plata Terminal Expansion

Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) has awarded the development contract for Cuenca del Plata terminal at Montevideo Port, Uruguay to the consortium of Jan de Nul, Mota-Engil and Stiler. TCP, a joint venture between Katoen Natie (80%) and the National Ports Administration of Uruguay (20%), is responsible for the expansion of the terminal. 

This ambitious project is being spearheaded by a joint venture between Jan de Nul, Mota-Engil, and Stiler. Jan de Nul is renowned for its expertise in marine and civil engineering, with a history of delivering complex infrastructure projects worldwide. Mota-Engil, a global construction leader, brings extensive experience in large-scale projects, while Stiler, a prominent Uruguayan construction company, adds local knowledge and expertise. Together, this formidable team is well-equipped to handle the challenges of the Cuenca del Plata terminal expansion.  

As Jan de Nul, Mota-Engil and Stiler oversees the development of extension infrastructure at the terminal, they will also build a new dock capable of receiving a container ship up to a depth of 14 meters. This expansion is a transformative project that will significantly enhance the region's logistical capabilities and is expected to generate approximately 1,000 direct as well as 5,000 indirect jobs; just during the construction phase. This evolution, backed by a substantial investment of approximately $455 million, aims to double the terminal's annual capacity, making it one of the most efficient container terminals in South America and bolsters Uruguay's position as a key logistics hub in the Southern Cone, facilitating increased trade and economic growth to the area. 

A critical aspect of the construction process involves the use of two ICE® 44VM Variable Moment Hammers that were purchased and transported to Uruguay from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). When asked about the project challenges, it was stated that getting the hammers to the job site was their biggest issue, as the hammers had to be fabricated, tested and delivered within a short window of time (just about 5 weeks) to meet the JV's tight construction schedule requirements.   These advanced hammers are essential for driving steel piles into the soil of the terminal site with minimal vibration; featuring variable moment technology and precise control the ICE® 44VM ensures efficient pile driving while protecting nearby structures from potential damage.  The expansion project also underscores the importance of hydraulic hoses from The Hose Company, which are critical for the operation of heavy machinery used in construction. These hoses ensure the seamless and safe transmission of hydraulic fluid, enabling the equipment to perform efficiently under high-pressure conditions.

One important and necessary component of the construction process is the use of deep foundation equipment. For this delicate project, the experts at Swingin chose to rent an ICE® 22VM Variable Moment Hammer from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) to drive the steel sheet piles with minimal impact on the surrounding structures.

The ICE® 22VM's variable moment technology ensures efficient and precise pile driving, which is crucial for the stability and longevity of the facility. Pike Secures Osprey to Kathleen Transmission Line

 

Pike Corporation (Pike) is undertaking a significant transmission line installation project that runs from Dade City to Auburndale, Florida. This project involves the construction of new overhead transmission lines, which are crucial for enhancing the reliability and capacity of the electrical grid in the region. Part of the Polk County Reliability Enhancement Project, the new line will extend from the Osprey Energy Center approximately 26 miles northwest to the existing Kathleen Substation in Polk County.   

Known for its comprehensive energy solutions, including engineering, design, construction, and maintenance of transmission, distribution, and substation infrastructure, Pike Corporation has over 75 years of experience and is a trusted leader in utility infrastructure construction, maintenance and storm response. For this project, they are employing their expertise in installing high-voltage transmission lines to improve the reliability of the electrical grid, reducing the likelihood of power outages and ensuring a more stable power supply for residents and businesses in the region. This much needed upgrade will increase the capacity to handle higher electricity loads, which is essential to meet the growing energy demands of the area. Construction on the transmission line began in October 2023, starting with vegetation removal followed by the installation of poles and wires.

For the pile portion of the transmission line installation project, the Pike crew have been installing caissons to support the deep foundations using a rented ICE® 110 and ICE® 66 Vibratory Pile Driver from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®), ensuring they are securely anchored and can support the weight and forces exerted by the transmission lines. This particular type of transmission line must be placed with a vibratory hammer and Pike's project manager was very happy with the performance of these machines, stating that they will definitely be using ICE® equipment for future jobs.  The success of the Kathleen Transmission Line project also underscores the importance of reliable hydraulic hoses from The Hose Company. These hoses are vital for the efficient operation of the heavy machinery used throughout the construction process, ensuring that hydraulic systems function smoothly and safely under the demanding conditions of such a large-scale project.

Once in place, load tests are completed on the installed piles to verify their capacity and ensure they meet the required specifications for supporting the transmission structures. Pile caps are then constructed to connect the tops of the piles and provide a stable platform for the transmission towers, along with soil stabilization techniques. These activities are crucial for the overall success of the transmission line project, as they provide the necessary support and stability for the high-voltage transmission lines. By ensuring that the foundations are robust and reliable, Pike Corporation is helping to enhance the safety and longevity of the electrical infrastructure in the area.

During a recent project in Chile, the ICE® 22 water-cooled hammer was utilized for ground improvement projects, where stone columns were deemed essential for enhancing soil stability. By installing the ICE® 22 EMIN on a Liebherr rig, the contractor was able to leverage the rig's renowned stability and power to achieve the desired production rates. This setup was chosen specifically for creating stone columns, which are crucial for soil conditions as required by the construction design, making it the ideal equipment for the job. The combination of the ICE® 22 and Liebherr rig allows for precise and efficient installation, making it a preferred choice for contractors working in tough environments. During this project, the contractor also used an ICE® HB-55 Hydraulic Rotary Drill, known for its high torque and speed capabilities, making it the perfect compliment for ground improvement projects like these.

O'Hare 21 Initiative Progresses

The O'Hare 21 project is a comprehensive, multi-phased initiative aimed at modernizing O'Hare Airport to enhance its efficiency and accessibility as an international gateway, including several key components such as the expansion and modernization of Terminal 5, the construction of new satellite concourses, and the development of the O'Hare Global Terminal. 

E.C. Korneffel Co. (ECK), a renowned marine, bridge, and piling contractor, has been a key player in the recent phase of the O'Hare 21 initiative. This ambitious project aims to modernize and expand O'Hare International Airport, enhancing its capacity and efficiency as a major global hub. Recently, ECK was tasked with the critical piling work necessary to support new structures and infrastructure at the airport. This involved driving various types of piles, including steel H-piles and pipe piles, to depths of up to 125 feet. These piles provide the essential stability and support required for the heavy loads and new constructions at O'Hare. 

To tackle the challenging ground conditions at the site, ECK employed a powerful ICE® 110 Vibratory Hammer. This equipment manufactured by International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is known for its high driving force of 412 tons and an eccentric moment of 11,000 in-lbs. and was instrumental in efficiently driving the piles through the dense soil and clay. The hammer's advanced vibration isolation technology also minimized the impact on surrounding structures, ensuring a smooth and effective piling process; making it a perfect choice for this undertaking. 

The project was not without its challenges. ECK had to navigate complex ground conditions, coordinate with multiple contractors, and contend with adverse weather. Despite these hurdles, their expertise paired with the robust capabilities of the ICE® 110 enabled them to successfully complete their portion of the project while remaining within budgetary and time constraints.
