Portal North Bridge UPDATE: A Game-Changer for the Northeast Corridor's Future

I62-66-50-22_MBogardus_STJV_NorthPortalBridgeNJ UPDATE

Since the construction of Portal North Bridge in 1910, it has become the busiest rail line in the entire Western Hemisphere. This swing-style rail bridge that spans the Hackensack River from Kearney to Secaucus, NJ has been working on her last legs. One out of seven times the bridge opens, it fails to close properly. Operational issues like this have been the culprit of major train delays and heavy boat traffic for years--sometimes causing trains to be backed up all the way to Boston. With over 450 trains passing over the bridge every day, NJ Transit decided to act and put an end to the commuting nightmares.

As of Summer 2022, replacement of the aging Portal Bridge commenced. The Skanska/Traylor Bros PNB Joint Venture (STJV) was awarded the $1.56 billion contract to replace the Portal Bridge with a new two-track, high-level, fixed-span bridge--representing the single largest construction award in NJ Transit history. The new Portal North Bridge will allow river traffic to pass underneath without interrupting rail traffic.

Fast forward to 2025, the construction of the Portal North Bridge has reached significant milestones. The third and final arch of the new bridge is now in place, marking a major step forward in this crucial infrastructure project. The new bridge, rising 50' (ft) above the Hackensack River, spans nearly 2.5 miles of the Northeast Corridor. It is expected to improve reliability, safety, and train speeds while eliminating conflicts with maritime traffic. NJ Transit anticipates trains will begin rolling over the new bridge by late 2026, with the old bridge scheduled for demolition the following year.

STJV has continued to rely on cutting-edge technology and robust equipment to drive this project toward success. As a key partner, International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) has supported the initiative with top-tier tools such as ICE® I-62 Diesel Impact Hammers and a range of Vibratory Driver/Extractors, including the ICE® 66C, ICE® 50B, and ICE® 22D. The construction team also employed durable hydraulic hoses, ensuring seamless and consistent equipment performance. With over 1,250 piles installed as part of the foundation, this endeavor demonstrates the critical role of reliable equipment in large-scale infrastructure.

Together, STJV and ICE® are bringing to life a safer and more efficient future for New Jersey's rail system. Congratulations to the entire Skanska/Traylor Bros PNB JV team!

Safety in Construction: ICE® Equipment Leading the Way

Dampener-SafetyPost_RSadler_ECI

At International Construction Equipment (ICE®), safety isn't just a priority--it's the foundation of everything we do. Our commitment to innovation, reliability, and proper training ensures that construction projects around the world can be completed efficiently and, most importantly, safely.

One recent project with our trusted partner, Engineers Construction Inc. (ECI), highlights the importance of choosing the right equipment for the job. On this construction site, ECI is utilizing an ICE® dampener with a steel cable, a decision informed by years of experience and the unmatched reliability of steel. Unlike synthetic nylon slings, which can be compromised under extreme conditions, steel cables provide the durability needed to tackle demanding projects with confidence.

The difference couldn't be clearer when we revisit an incident from 2015. ECI learned a valuable lesson after using a synthetic nylon sling while driving a 65-foot sheet pile only about 10 feet into the ground. The nylon snapped, creating a situation that could have been catastrophic. While no one was harmed, and the hammer remained attached to the sheet, the failure revealed the limitations of synthetic materials. The nylon sleeve melted and fused under intense conditions. According to the project manager at ECI, "everything from the exterior looked fine, but the heat from the vibration caused the individual strands to melt together and degrade". It was a big reality check for the ECI crew, proving that nylon slings are no match for the demands of heavy-duty construction.

Today, Engineers Construction Inc. prioritizes safety by choosing proven solutions like our ICE® dampeners paired with steel cables. But at ICE®, we believe that providing the right equipment is just the beginning. Maintenance plays an equally critical role in ensuring ongoing safety and performance. Regular inspections, proper care, and timely servicing of all components, including hoses, are essential. Hoses, in particular, are often overlooked but play a vital part in the reliable operation of our equipment. Keeping them in top condition helps prevent leaks, failures, and unnecessary downtime, contributing to a safer and more efficient job site.

Our dedicated sales and service team is also here to ensure that every customer knows how to use and maintain our tools effectively. We offer training programs to help crews not only operate confidently but also stay informed about proper upkeep practices. Because at ICE®, safety extends beyond the product--it's embedded in everything we do.

At ICE®, we take pride in being more than an equipment manufacturer. We're partners in your success, advocates for safety, and innovators in construction technology. When it comes to the tools you trust on the job site, don't settle for less than the best. Choose ICE®--because safety is our standard.
