Trevcon Tackles Harlem River Sheet Piling with ICE® Solutions
August 26, 2025
The Harlem River waterfront and FDR Drive corridor are vital arteries in New York City's infrastructure network, serving both as key transportation routes and as buffers against coastal flooding. As part of the city's broader resiliency initiative, a major construction effort is underway to reinforce this critical area against future storm events and rising sea levels. Once completed this significant project will help protect surrounding communities and infrastructure while enhancing long-term sustainability along the riverfront.
Trevcon Inc., a seasoned marine and heavy civil contractor, is leading the charge on this important effort. Their scope includes the installation of permanent sheet piling along the Harlem River and FDR Drive; an essential part of the flood protection system. With extensive experience in complex urban environments, Trevcon is well-equipped to handle the technical and logistical challenges of this high-profile project.
To drive the sheeting, Trevcon is utilizing their own ICE® 28 Vibratory Hammer, a reliable workhorse from their fleet of International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) deep foundation arsenal. When the Trevcon team met subsurface obstructions that prevented the sheets from reaching grade, they turned to ICE® once again; this time renting an ICE® IP-3 Hydraulic Impact Hammer. Outfitted with the innovative "Pants" attachment, the IP-3 can sit directly on the sheet pile without the need for traditional leads. These leg-like extensions slip over the sheeting like a clothespin, offering greater flexibility and ease of use in tight or irregular conditions.
To keep operations running smoothly in these demanding conditions, Trevcon is also relying on high-performance hydraulic connections that deliver consistent power where it's needed most. These rugged, Hydrauli-Flex™ hose lines are engineered to handle the intense pressures of deep foundation work, ensuring that both the ICE® IP-3 and ICE® 28 hammers operate with precision and reliability, even when the job throws unexpected challenges their way.
Looking ahead, Trevcon will soon be adding an ICE® HS-50 Rotary Drill and a set of ICE® 26" (in) leads to their equipment lineup for this project. The drill will be used to bore out previously driven pipe piles, which will further enhance their ability to adapt to evolving site conditions and maintain project momentum.
This enterprise is a cornerstone of New York City's climate resilience strategy, and ICE® is proud to support Trevcon with both owned and rental equipment. We thank Trevcon Inc. for their continued trust in International Construction Equipment, Inc., and we applaud their commitment to building a stronger, safer future for the Harlem community.

RJG Construction Anchors Another Milestone in Newfoundland
August 18, 2025
Nestled on the rugged northwest coast of Newfoundland, the small community of Lark Harbour is preparing for a major transformation. As part of Canada's $101 million investment in small craft harbors and search and rescue infrastructure, Lark Harbour will soon be home to a new wharf and dock facility, an essential upgrade that will support Coast Guard operations and enhance regional maritime safety.
At the helm of this ambitious project is RJG Construction, a family-owned company based in the historic port town of St. John's, Newfoundland. Known as the easternmost city in North America and a strategic WWII port, St. John's is now home to one of the most respected marine piling contractors in the region. RJG Construction Limited, founded by Bob Giovannini in 1991 and now transitioning leadership to his son Nick, has built a reputation for reliability, precision, and deep-rooted expertise in marine infrastructure.
RJG has been a loyal customer of International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for over a decade, owning a robust fleet of ICE® equipment that includes the ICE® HS-50 Rotary Head Drill, ICE® I-19v2 Diesel Impact Hammer, ICE® 22 and ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammers paired with ICE® 350 and 595 Power Units , as well as an impressive array of ICE® Dampeners. Preferring to invest in the tools that keep their projects on track and under control, the experts at RJG are currently considering adding an even larger ICE® hammer to their arsenal. To ensure optimal performance and durability in the harsh marine environment, all ICE® vibratory and hydraulic hammers and drills are equipped with Hydrauli-Flex™ ultra-durable hoses. These hoses are engineered to withstand extreme pressures and temperatures, providing the reliability needed for continuous operation in remote and demanding conditions.
The Lark Harbour project, valued at approximately $13 million CAD, began in February 2025 with pile driving operations. The goal is to complete the wharf and decking by October 2026, though RJG is pushing to finish by August; an ambitious target given the site's remote location, nearly 10 hours from their St. John's base. In an effort to solidify this forward movement, RJG crews have been stationed on-site for extended periods, braving Newfoundland's harsh winters to maintain momentum year-round.
Initially, the plan called for drilling 24" (in) hollow steel pipes to bedrock using an ICE® HS-50 Rotary Head powered by an ICE® 350 Power Unit and supported by four Atlas Copco compressors for down-the-hole hammering. However, the subsurface conditions proved less resistant than anticipated, prompting a shift in strategy.
To meet this challenge, RJG's engineers revised the plan to drive closed-end 24" (in) diameter steel pipes, each 40 meters long, into the subsoil until practical refusal. RJG's experienced crew adapted quickly, deploying their ICE® 44 vibratory hammer to set the piles in place, followed by the ICE® I-19 impact hammer to drive them to the required depth.
With eight marine piling projects currently underway and more in the pipeline, RJG Construction continues to demonstrate why they are the go-to contractor for Newfoundland and Labrador's most challenging marine infrastructure needs. Their work at Lark Harbour is not just another job, it's a testament to their legacy, their adaptability, and their commitment to building the future of Canada's coastal communities.
At ICE®, we are proud to support RJG Construction with the deep foundation equipment they rely on to deliver critical infrastructure across Newfoundland and Labrador. Our long-standing relationships with all our clients, like RJG, are built on trust, performance, and a shared commitment to excellence. We're honored to be part of their journey and to work closely with the RJG team, both in sales and service, to ensure every project is a success.

Drilling Deep into the Heart of NYC
August 14, 2025
In the dense and demanding urban environment of New York City, foundation work isn't just a construction task--it's a logistical ballet. That's why when Yonkers Contracting Company (YCC) faced the challenge of installing large-diameter micropiles in tight quarters and complex ground conditions, they turned to trusted partners: International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) and their assortment of powerful Comacchio Drill Rigs.
At the center of the operation was the Comacchio MC-16, a compact yet mighty drill rig with 40,000 ft/lbs of torque and pullback, purpose-built for tough micropile work. This rig, rented from their local ICE® Drilling Service and Sales Team, proved indispensable thanks to its three-section mast design that could be configured for both long and short stroke operations. In low-clearance areas--such as under existing bridge girders within the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) Yard--the MC-16's short-mast configuration made what seemed impossible not only possible, but productive.
To date, YCC has installed 120 micropiles using the Comacchio MC-16 and an additional 24 with the Comacchio MC-28, both tasked with drilling 16" diameter x 0.500" wall micropiles up to 60 feet deep into rock, with a 6.5' rock socket using the MINCON Drill Through Ring Bit System. Yonkers crews expertly worked with the 8" BECO threaded drill rods having a 10-3/4" (in) OD, pushing equipment capacity to meet this project's rigorous structural demands. To ensure the MC28 could access all drill locations on site, YCC collaborated with ICE® to purchase a custom short mast directly from Comacchio, measuring just 24' (ft) in overall length, allowing for a 14' (ft) stroke and the use of 10' (ft) piles. Supporting this configuration, a rugged, kink-resistant hose line from Hydrauli-Flex™ was chosen to handle the demanding hydraulic loads while maintaining flexibility in the site's tightest corners.
The complexities of the job weren't limited to the underground. With the site's proximity, just four feet from active subway tracks; along with restricted headroom, road closures, and coordination with NYCT, the project called for expert navigation through the logistic landmines. As YCC expected, ICE® stepped up, not only supplying equipment that could meet stringent specs, but also collaborating with the contractor to maintain safety, scheduling, and performance targets every step of the way.
"Finding a rig capable of handling these large piles in such a tight environment was key," said Project Manager Anthony Sarvaideo of YCC. "ICE®'s support and adaptability made all the difference."
As work continues into the latter half of the year, especially within the sensitive zones of the MTA yard, the importance of reliable machinery and agile partners only grows. Projects like this aren't just about getting the job done; they are about preserving public infrastructure, minimizing disruptions, and innovating under pressure.
Special thanks to Yonkers Contracting Company for their commitment to choosing equipment they can count on. ICE®, your one-stop foundation shop, is happy to deliver not just equipment, but solutions--on time, on spec, and on point.

Precision Under Pressure
August 2, 2025
Howard Concrete Pumping Company, Inc. is currently engaged in a critical infrastructure upgrade at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) I-376 Commercial Street Bridge Replacement project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The work is being performed for S&B USA Construction (S&B) and The Joseph B. Fay Company (Fay) and involves the installation of a substantial number of micropiles to support the new bridge structure.
The scope of work includes the installation of nearly 300 micropiles, each measuring 9 5/8" (in) in diameter, totaling over 15,000 lineal feet. These piles vary in length from 60 to 120' (ft) and are drilled through a complex subsurface profile consisting of urban fill and colluvial soils, terminating in competent sandstone bedrock. To meet the structural demands of the project, each pile is being reinforced with a #28 bar, designed to accommodate significant axial and lateral loads.
A unique challenge to this project is the installation of all piles beneath the existing bridge structure, with approximately half of the piles being installed in headroom conditions of less than 15' (ft). To navigate these constraints, the expert construction crews are utilizing a combination of Comacchio SpA MC8 and MC22 drilling rigs, which are well-suited for low-clearance, high-precision work in urban environments. These rigs were rented from International Construction Equipment (ICE®), whose support and equipment reliability have been instrumental in maintaining project momentum.
To enable safe and efficient operation in these tight conditions, Hydrauli-Flex™ hose systems are being employed, which provide the flexibility and durability needed to manage hydraulic power delivery in confined spaces. These hoses are critical in maintaining consistent performance and minimizing downtime during drilling operations.
This bridge replacement is a vital infrastructure improvement for the Pittsburgh area, enhancing safety and mobility for thousands of daily commuters. Kudos to Howard, S&B USA Construction and Joseph B. Fay for their leadership on this complex project; and thank you for trusting ICE® to provide the specialized equipment needed to get the job done right.
