Re-energizing Safety Harbor’s Waterfront

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Tampa Bay, the Safety Harbor Marina is undergoing a major transformation aimed at enhancing public access and waterfront infrastructure. Spearheaded by the City of Safety Harbor, this ambitious renovation project began in July 2025 and is slated for completion by December 2026. The scope includes the full demolition and reconstruction of the existing marina, with 288 new pilings being installed to support a modernized pier structure. Once completed, the upgraded marina will offer improved functionality and long-term durability, ensuring it remains a cherished community asset for generations to come.

Salt Lake City International Airport is entering the final phase of its historic $5.13 billion Terminal Redevelopment Program (TRP), a multi-year effort to modernize one of the busiest hubs in the Mountain West. With construction now in Phase 4, crews are building out 16 new gates on Concourse B-east; five of which are set to open in Fall 2025, and the remaining 11 by October 2026. This final stretch includes extensive airfield paving, jet bridge installations, and interior finishes, all designed to support up to 34 million passengers annually. The project has been funded entirely through airport revenues, including a $700 million bond issuance approved in June 2025, ensuring no impact on local property taxes.
Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction (RLW), a division of Wadsworth Construction, was selected to lead this critical phase of development. Known for their deep foundation expertise, logistical precision and innovative problem-solving, RLW has managed the delivery and installation of over 1,071 steel pipe piles and 1,517 H-piles across the site. Their reputation for delivering complex infrastructure projects under challenging conditions, such as working year-round in extreme weather, made them the ideal partner for this high-stakes endeavor. RLW's engineering team demonstrated exceptional adaptability by replacing a complex caisson design for a pedestrian bridge with driven steel piles. This innovative shift not only improved safety and reduced costs but also cut construction time in half, highlighting RLW's commitment to efficiency and forward-thinking solutions.
To meet the demands of the deep foundation work, RLW turned to International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for heavy-duty pile driving solutions. The team rented three ICE® I-46v2 Diesel Impact Pile Hammers, known for their high energy output and reliability in tough soil conditions. These hammers were used to drive 60'x16" steel pipe piles and H-piles, forming the backbone of the new concourse and tunnel structures. The choice of diesel hammers was strategic, ensuring consistent performance and minimal vibration near active airport terminals; a critical consideration for maintaining operations during construction. To boost efficiency, RLW also deployed multiple ICE® Model 44B Vibratory Pile Drivers outfitted with Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, achieving a remarkable pace of 60 to 80 piles per day. These specialized hoses offer enhanced flexibility and durability, making them ideal for the rigors of vibratory pile driving. By utilizing this diverse range of equipment on-site, the RLW experts have showcased the adaptability and performance of ICE® solutions in meeting the evolving demands of complex construction projects.

Bolivar Pass Pier Construction Underway

In April 2025, the first of 202 piles was officially driven into the ground, marking the beginning of a transformative project at Bolivar Pass in Southeast Texas. Also known as Bolivar Roads, this strategic waterway lies between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula, serving as a vital connection between Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. This pivotal location plays a critical role in coastal protection, navigation and shipping, environmental restoration, and flood mitigation infrastructure; making it an ideal site for investment in resilient public infrastructure.
Upon completion, the recreational pier will extend approximately 1,100 feet into the water and encompass nearly 30,500 square feet of elevated structure. Oversight for the initiative is provided by the Texas General Land Office, with financial support from both the State of Texas and the federal government. The final structure is intended to reestablish public access to the waterfront and reinstate recreational amenities that have been absent since the closure of Bolivar Pass in 2019. In addition to enhancing quality of life for residents, the project is anticipated to stimulate economic activity and strengthen the region's connection to the Gulf Coast's natural and cultural heritage.
Construction for this project is being carried out by Shoreline Foundation, Inc. (SFI), a contractor known for its expertise in marine and heavy civil construction. With a strong track record in pile driving using concrete, steel, and timber, as well as bulkhead and seawall construction, bridge and pier work, and environmental restoration, the experts at Shoreline bring the experience and capability needed to deliver this complex coastal infrastructure.
Pile driving operations for the Bolivar Pass Recreational Pier are being supported by deep foundation equipment from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). For this first portion of the project, SFI is utilizing two ICE® 33 Vibratory Hammers, currently on rental, along with a newly acquired ICE® I-46 Diesel Impact Hammer to drive the 202 piles required for the structure. The ICE® 33 Vibratory Hammer is known for its compact design and high-frequency performance, making it ideal for marine applications where precision and control are essential. Its ability to operate efficiently in tight spaces and variable soil conditions has made it a trusted tool for contractors working in coastal environments. Its resilience and adaptability are essential for ensuring uninterrupted operation, particularly when equipment is deployed from barges or temporary platforms in open water. The ICE® I-46 Diesel Impact Hammer, with its rugged construction and high energy output, is especially effective for driving large-diameter piles into dense or resistant soils. Its diesel-powered design allows for consistent performance even in remote or offshore settings, reducing the need for external power sources and simplifying logistics.

All Aboard for a Major Modernization

Beneath the bustling streets of downtown St. Louis, Missouri, a historic piece of infrastructure is getting a much-needed upgrade. The Union Station Tunnel, originally constructed in 1902 by the Terminal Railroad Association, once served as a vital subway access point for 36 rail lines arriving at the iconic Union Station. Now, more than a century later, the tunnel is being rehabilitated to support modern transit needs while preserving its legacy. The project, led by Bi-State Development and Metro Transit, includes structural reconstruction, communications upgrades, and emergency systems enhancements; all designed to ensure the tunnel remains a reliable part of the city's MetroLink commuter rail system for generations to come.
Nicholson Construction, a nationally recognized geotechnical contractor, was selected to perform critical foundation work within the tunnel. Known for their expertise in complex underground environments, Nicholson is installing micropiles to reinforce the aging structure. Their work is essential to stabilizing the tunnel's concrete ceiling slab and steel support columns, especially given the limited overhead clearance and the need to avoid disruption to the active rail and parking infrastructure above.
To tackle the challenging subsurface conditions, ranging from clay to limestone, the experts at Nicholson turned to International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for specialized drilling equipment. On site, crews are using a rented Comacchio MC4D, a compact hydraulic drilling rig designed specifically for confined spaces like tunnels and basements. The MC4D's modular hydraulic circuits and optional telescopic mast accessory allow for precise drilling in low-clearance environments, making it ideal for this job. Its ability to accommodate rotary and rotary-percussive drilling systems ensures it can adapt to the varying geology beneath St. Louis paired with the rig's separate power pack that features Hydrauli-Flex® hoses and customizable controls further enhances the MC4D's performance in tight, urban job sites.

One of the most impactful upgrades underway is the construction of the Berth 301 Wharf at Port Redwing, a project designed to expand bulk cargo capacity and improve operational efficiency. With a budget of $67 million and a targeted completion timeline of 12 months, this initiative reflects the port's strategic commitment to long-term growth and resilience.
Orion Marine, a division of Orion Group Holdings, was selected for this high-profile project based on its extensive experience in marine infrastructure and pile driving. Known for delivering complex waterfront projects across the Gulf Coast, Orion brings the technical know-how and equipment needed to execute large-scale wharf construction. Their multi-year relationship with Port Tampa Bay and proven track record in dredging, piling, and concrete marine structures made them the ideal choice for Berth 301.
At the heart of the project is the installation of large-diameter steel pipe piles, which will serve as the foundational support for the new concrete wharf. These piles are driven deep into the substrate to ensure structural integrity and load-bearing capacity, especially critical given the increased vessel traffic and cargo weights expected at the berth. Orion's pile driving operations are powered by an ICE® 595 Power Unit paired with robust Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses that deliver consistent, high-pressure hydraulic energy to the vibratory hammer system. Its smart controls and fuel-efficient design help maintain uptime while reducing operating costs, which are key advantages on a long-duration marine job. A Significant Upgrade for a Vital Waterway

Demolition is underway at the Montgomery Locks and Dam near Monaca, Pennsylvania, marking the beginning of a transformative $1.59 billion infrastructure project led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Originally constructed in the 1920s, the aging lock chamber is being replaced with a modern 110' x 600' (ft) primary lock chamber to accommodate larger vessels and improve navigation efficiency along the Ohio River. With completion expected by 2033, this massive undertaking will not only enhance commercial transportation but also support regional economic growth for decades to come.
The joint venture of Trumbull-Brayman was selected to lead this monumental effort, bringing together decades of experience in heavy civil construction and marine infrastructure. Chosen for their deep expertise in heavy civil and marine construction, Trumbull-Brayman JV brings a powerful combination of experience and innovation to the Montgomery Locks and Dam project. This joint venture has a strong track record of tackling complex infrastructure challenges, particularly in dam and lock systems. International Construction Equipment, Inc. These micropiles are critical, as they will bear the weight of heavy batching equipment at the on-site concrete batch plant, which is expected to produce an impressive 400,000 cubic yards of concrete throughout the project. Additionally, ICE® serviced the contractor's own ICE® 44B Vibratory Hammer prior to its deployment on-site, ensuring peak performance for demanding pile-driving tasks, including assuring that the Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses were properly fitted and functioning to deliver consistent hydraulic power for driving sheet piles deep into the riverbank foundation.

An Historic Investment in West Virginia’s Future

The Nucor Steel mill in Apple Grove, West Virginia, represents a transformative moment in the state's industrial history. With a staggering $3.1 billion investment, the largest in West Virginia's history, the project is set to reshape the region's economic landscape. Spanning 1,700 acres between the Ohio River and WV Route 2, the facility will produce up to 3 million tons of sheet steel annually. It will feature advanced capabilities including 84-inch sheet products, a 76-inch tandem cold mill, and two galvanizing lines tailored for high-end automotive and construction-grade steel. This mill is not just a steel plant, it's a symbol of growth, innovation, and long-term opportunity for the community and the state.
Given the scale and complexity of the Nucor project, selecting the right contractor for foundational work was critical. Delivering 207 tons of driving force at 1,800 vibrations per minute, this high-frequency hammer proved to be the ideal solution for the job. It was deployed to drive sheet piles for retaining walls and cofferdams, install foundation piles, and assist with temporary shoring and excavation support, while its Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses ensured reliable hydraulic flow and durability throughout the demanding operation. Thanks to the 44's ability to perform efficiently in the dense riverbank soils while minimizing vibration transmission to nearby structures, this mighty hammer became an indispensable asset on site.

In Danville, PA, the Geisinger Medical Center is undergoing a major expansion to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region. Located along the Susquehanna River, Geisinger has long been a cornerstone of central Pennsylvania's medical infrastructure. This latest development includes an 11-story tower, a new emergency department, private patient rooms, and a multi-level parking garage; all part of an $880 million modernization effort aimed at improving patient care and expanding capacity.
The foundation work for this project is no small feat. Contractors Whiting-Turner, Coastal, Brayman, and Nicholson Construction are all on-site, collaborating to install a combi-wall King Pile system; a critical structural element designed to stabilize the ground and support the new build. The combi-wall system is especially suited for challenging soil conditions and deep foundation requirements, making it ideal for this high-profile hospital expansion.
To execute the most recent portion of work, these expert teams are currently utilizing a range of Comacchio Drill Rigs rented from their local International Construction Equipment (ICE®) Sales Representative. Known for their precision and reliability in geotechnical applications, these multi-functional rigs are paired with durable Hydrauli-Flex™ hose assemblies, which play a key role in keeping the equipment running smoothly, especially under the demanding conditions of continuous operation.
Interestingly, recent excavation efforts have revealed remnants of the hospital's original 1914 construction, including old columns and signage, adding a layer of historical significance to the job. A tower crane is expected to be installed soon, marking the next phase of vertical construction.
