ICE® 110C at Work on I‑70 KC
February 1, 2026The Improve I‑70 KC Project marks a major milestone in the evolution of one of Missouri's oldest and most heavily traveled interstate corridors. Originally constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, this stretch of I‑70 has carried generations of commuters, freight, and cross‑country travelers through the heart of Kansas City. After decades of wear and increasing congestion, the corridor is now undergoing a $237 million modernization, spanning five miles between Paseo Boulevard and U.S. 40/31st Street. The project includes the replacement of 15 bridges, rehabilitation of seven more, and the reconstruction of historically troublesome curves like Benton and Jackson to improve safety and traffic flow. Beginning in spring 2025 and continuing through spring 2028, this overhaul represents one of the most significant infrastructure reinvestments in the region in more than half a century.
To deliver a project of this scale, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) selected the Clarkson/Rademacher Joint Venture, a partnership built on deep regional experience and specialized technical capability. Clarkson Construction Company, founded in Kansas City in 1880, has shaped much of the city's modern infrastructure; from highways and interchanges to major civic structures. Digging Deep for Durability
January 26, 2026
Interstate 84 is a lifeline for Connecticut commuters and freight traffic, especially along the westbound corridor toward New York City. In 2025, a vital culvert replacement project began in Southington, targeting a narrow strip of land between highway lanes where aging infrastructure risked undermining the road above. The culvert, which channels water beneath the interstate, had reached the end of its service life. To prevent future flooding and preserve the structural integrity of the roadway, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) launched this upgrade as part of its long-term resilience plan. While the exact budget hasn't been disclosed, similar projects in the region have ranged from $510 million, with completion expected by late 2025.
The project was awarded to Blakeslee Arpia Chapman (BAC), a Connecticut-based contractor known for its precision in deep foundation work and complex civil infrastructure. With decades of experience and a reputation for tackling challenging subsurface conditions, Blakeslee was the ideal choice for a culvert replacement that required excavation beneath active highway lanes. Their ability to balance safety, speed, and minimal disruption made them a trusted partner for CTDOT and a reassuring presence for local commuters.
To protect the roadway from vibration damage, Blakeslee wisely implemented a pre-drilling strategy using an ICE® HS50 hydraulic auger. Equipped with a 12-inch bit, the auger drilled 30' (ft) deep to clear subsurface obstructions and prepared the ground for H-beam installation. This approach allowed the team to avoid direct pile driving, which could have compromised the road's stability. The ICE® HS50 was selected for its torque, reliability, and ability to perform in tight spaces with precision. Its performance on this job exemplified how thoughtful engineering and the right equipment can overcome complex geotechnical challenges. Once pre-drilling was complete, an ICE® 22 Vibratory Hammer was used to install the H-beams, forming the backbone of the soldier pile and lagging system that stabilized the excavation zone.
Rugged Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses powered both the ICE® HS50 auger and the ICE® 22 vibratory hammer, ensuring flawless hydraulic performance in both drilling and driving applications. From the first drill to the final drive, the equipment delivered seamless hydraulic performance that kept operations moving without a hitch. These results spoke for themselves, as the team was so impressed by the ICE® 22's power and reliability that they didn't just finish the job strong; they chose to make it part of their permanent fleet.
As the new culvert has now taken shape beneath I-84, the Southington community can look forward to safer, more reliable infrastructure for generations to come. International Construction Equipment extends its thanks to Blakeslee Arpia Chapman for their expert execution and commitment to innovation. This work not only protected a critical stretch of highway but also demonstrated how drilling deep can pave the way for long-term success. By combining deep drilling expertise with trusted ICE® equipment, Blakeslee delivered a solution that will stand the test of time and that's something we're proud to support.

Lunda and ICE® on the Wabash River
January 14, 2026The I-64 Wabash River Bridge Replacement Project is one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in southern Illinois and Indiana in recent years. Valued at $136 million and scheduled for completion by 2029, the endeavor will replace the aging twin spans that currently connect White County, Illinois, and Posey County, Indiana. This 1.6‑mile stretch of improvements includes not only the new dual bridges but also roadway upgrades, ensuring safer and more efficient travel along this vital eastwest corridor. In order to minimize disruption during this undertaking, traffic has been shifted to the eastbound bridge while the westbound span is dismantled and rebuilt. For the communities along the Wabash, the initiative represents both a historic renewal of a critical crossing and a long-term investment in regional commerce and connectivity.
To deliver a project of this scale, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) selected Lunda Construction Company, a contractor with a proven record of excellence in complex bridge building. Founded in 1938 and now a subsidiary of Tutor Perini Corporation, Lunda has completed more than 100 major river crossings across the United States. Known for its engineering expertise, safety culture, and ability to manage challenging marine environments, Lunda is uniquely suited for the Wabash River project and their experience with long-span bridges and heavy civil works ensures that the new I‑64 structures will not only meet but exceed modern standards for durability and performance.
For this most recent phase along the river, Lunda crews are utilizing an ICE® 50B Vibratory Hammer, previously purchased from International Construction Equipment (ICE®), to drive H and steel sheet piles for the cofferdam installation and foundation support. H‑piles were chosen for their strength and ability to transfer loads deep into the riverbed, forming the backbone of the cofferdam walls and supporting the drilled shaft foundations.
The ICE® 50B Vibratory Hammer is a normal-frequency driver/extractor built for versatility, capable of handling both steel sheet piles and H‑piles. Its design makes it particularly effective in the mixed soils of the Wabash River, where crews must contend with dense sands, silts, and pockets of gravel. To power the system, the hammer is paired with an ICE® hydraulic power unit, linked through Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses that deliver steady, high‑pressure hydraulic flow even under demanding river conditions. This configuration ensures the hammer maintains consistent vibratory energy, driving the piles deep into the riverbed with precision and efficiency.
Lunda's crews selected the ICE® 50B not only for its performance but also for its compact footprint, which allows for easier maneuvering on barges and tight work platforms. This is especially important for river projects like Wabash, as it is compact enough for the limited space while still delivering the heavy driving and extraction force needed for cofferdams, sheet piles, and foundation work. It's designed to balance power with maneuverability, making it suitable for projects where access and footprint are limited, but pile-driving strength is essential. They also value its high extraction force, a feature that provides flexibility when piles must be repositioned or removed. Together, these qualities make the ICE® 50B an ideal fit for the Wabash River Bridge project, balancing power, reliability, and adaptability in one piece of equipment.
On site, these features translate into real-world efficiency; as the ICE® 50B's consistent vibration ensures that the H and sheet piles are driven quickly and aligned precisely, creating watertight cofferdams that allow excavation and concrete placement to proceed safely. Once the cofferdams are secured, the same system supports the installation of foundation piles, ensuring stability for the massive drilled shafts required for this endeavor.
Simultaneously, drilled shaft installation is progressing, with rebar cages ranging from 55 feet (22,000 lbs.) to 130 feet (76,000 lbs.) being lowered into place. The previously driven cofferdams provide the dry, stable environment needed for these shafts, while ICE® equipment ensures that the heavy reinforcement can be placed without disruption. Together, the vibratory hammer and drilled shaft operations highlight how ICE® technology is central to building the deep foundations that will carry the new Wabash River Bridge for decades to come.
As the piers rise and the new spans take shape, gratitude flows from both the community and the project's partners. Residents and travelers alike look forward to safer, smoother journeys across the Wabash, while local businesses anticipate the economic boost that comes with improved infrastructure. International Construction Equipment is honored to support Lunda Construction in this effort, providing the tools and technology that help turn engineering plans into lasting structures. Together, Lunda and ICE® are not just building a bridge; they are reinforcing the lifeline that connects two states, strengthens regional trade, and ensures that future generations can cross the Wabash with confidence. Amazing work, to the entire Lunda crew!

Scuba Support Strengthens Shoreline
January 11, 2026In Belford, New Jersey, a seawall project was recently underway that carried real weight for the community. The shoreline needed reinforcement to guard against erosion and the relentless push of storms, and the work demanded not only new steel sheets but also the careful removal of old piles buried beneath the waterline. These legacy piles, a mix of aging timber and corroded steel sheets from earlier construction, had to be extracted before the new structure could take shape. It was a job that called for seasoned hands and sharp minds, and Bird Construction stepped forward with the expertise they've built over more than fifty years in marine construction. Their crews are known throughout New Jersey and New York for tackling the toughest waterfront challenges, from bulkheads to dredging, and this project was another chance to show why their reputation endures.
To meet the demands of the job, Bird Construction turned to International Construction Equipment (ICE®) for a short-term rental of an ICE® 22 Driver/Extractor fitted with a 10-foot extension. The ICE® rig provided the reach and power needed to pull stubborn piles from beneath the surface, and its Hydrauli-Flex™ hose system ensured smooth hydraulic performance even in the demanding marine environment. With the right equipment in place, the team could focus on the delicate task of extraction.
Still, machinery alone couldn't solve the problem. The piles lay hidden underwater, where visibility was poor, and alignment had to be exact. For that, Bird Construction relied on a scuba diver. Descending into the murky water, the diver became the eyes and hands of the operation, securing slings and chains around the submerged piles, guiding the rigging into place, and communicating conditions back to the operators above. It was a blend of human precision and mechanical strength, each dependent on the other, that made the work possible.
Together, the ICE® equipment, Bird's skilled crews, and the diver's steady presence brought the project to completion. Now with the old timber and steel piles removed safely, the seawall has been prepared for its new coated steel sheets, and the community of Belford has gained a stronger line of defense against the elements. ICE® extends its gratitude to Bird Construction for their professionalism, to the diver whose role was indispensable, and to the Belford community itself, whose resilience inspires the work of building safer, stronger shorelines.

By reinforcing the shoreline with modern composite sheet piles, the project ensures that residents, visitors, and businesses can continue to enjoy the area safely for decades to come. With installation progressing at an impressive 40 linear feet per day, the effort remains on track to meet its ambitious timeline, safeguarding one of Daytona's most cherished waterfronts for the future.
Leading the charge is East Coast Marine Construction, guided by Project Manager Pete Kolb, whose team was selected for their deep expertise in marine construction throughout Volusia County. Known for precision, reliability, and a strong commitment to customer service, East Coast Marine has built a reputation for delivering complex shoreline projects with both engineering excellence and environmental sensitivity. Their extensive portfolio of seawalls, docks, and stabilization systems reflects a nuanced understanding of coastal dynamics. With local roots and firsthand knowledge of Daytona's soil conditions, tidal behavior, and community priorities, the company is uniquely equipped to navigate the challenges of the City Island project and deliver results that are sure to stand the test of time.
Central to the project's success is an ICE® Model 2 Vibratory Hammer, suspended from an excavator and powered by a hydraulic pack to provide maximum reach and control. This lightweight hammer was specifically chosen for its ability to drive CMI UC95 FRP composite sheet piles in 30-foot lengths that require a delicate balance of force and finesse. The ICE® Model 2 delivers precisely controlled vibration energy, allowing the sheets to be seated securely while minimizing the risk of cracking or splintering. Paired with heavy-duty Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, the Model 2 is ensured with consistent, safe hydraulic power delivery throughout the operation, even under the most demanding conditions. On-site, ICE® representative Billy Taylor recommended adding additional weights to the hammer, a field adjustment that significantly improved driving efficiency and boosted daily production rates. The performance gains were so substantial that East Coast Marine Construction has decided to add the ICE® Model 2 to their permanent fleet.
The City Island Enhancement Project represents more than shoreline reinforcement; it is a long-term commitment to preserving Daytona Beach's waterfront heritage and protecting a treasured space for both residents and visitors. Once completed, this stronger, more resilient seawall will support local recreation, tourism, and marine activity for generations. International Construction Equipment extends its sincere appreciation to East Coast Marine Construction for their craftsmanship, adaptability, and partnership throughout this project. Their expertise, paired with the reliability of ICE® equipment, is transforming City Island into a safer and more vibrant destination, shining a light on an achievement that reflects both community pride and engineering excellence.

ICE® at the Heart of Charleston’s Flood Solution
January 5, 2026
Downtown Charleston has always been defined by its history and its challenges with water. This is especially true at the intersection of Huger Street and King Street. Flooding has long been a disruptive force in the area, with rain events often leaving two to three feet of standing water in the corridor. To address this chronic issue, the city recently launched the Huger Street Pump Station Project; an ambitious stormwater drainage improvement effort with a price tag in the tens of millions. Now in its final phase, the station is expected to be completed by 2026 after an 18‑month build, and once operational, it will have the capacity to move an astonishing 70,000 gallons of water per minute, safeguarding homes, businesses, and traffic flow in one of Charleston's busiest areas.
To bring this vision to life, SJ Hamill Construction was selected as the prime contractor. Known for their expertise in heavy civil construction and ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects across the Southeast, SJ Hamill has built a reputation for precision and reliability. Collaborating closely with Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson engineers, the Charleston Housing Authority, and the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority, SJ Hamill's team is ensuring the new pump station blends seamlessly into Charleston's existing drainage network. With decades of experience and a proven track record in projects that demand both technical skill and community sensitivity, SJ Hamill is uniquely suited to lead this transformative effort.
One of the most critical steps in the build was the construction of a cofferdam, a temporary watertight enclosure that allowed crews to work below the waterline in dry conditions. By holding back groundwater and stormwater intrusion, the cofferdam created a safe, stable environment for excavation and foundation work. Inside this protected zone, International Construction Equipment (ICE®) played a vital role. The ICE® 33 Vibratory Hammer was chosen to drive the deep foundation piles and sheet piles that stabilize the pump station and form the retaining walls for stormwater storage. Outfitted with Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, the ICE® 33 delivered reliable hydraulic power while maintaining durability under demanding conditions. Vibratory hammers are especially valuable in urban environments like Charleston, where speed and reduced noise are essential to minimize disruption, and paired with the cofferdam, they ensured the structure could be built securely from the ground up.
As the Huger Street Pump Station rises, gratitude flows from both the city and International Construction Equipment. For Charleston residents, the project promises relief from years of flooding frustrations and renewed confidence in their infrastructure. For ICE®, it is a privilege to support SJ Hamill Construction with equipment that helps turn engineering plans into lasting resilience. Together, this skilled contractor and supplier are laying the foundation for more than flood protection; they're giving Charleston's residents the confidence that their city can thrive, rain or shine. Excellent work, to all involved!
