Rebuilding a Regional Lifeline

I30-SBruce-REPierson_JessupMD(1)

The MD 175 / MD 295 Interchange Improvements project in Jessup, Maryland, is reshaping one of the region's most important transportation corridors. For years, this interchange has carried the weight of rapid growth around Fort Meade, the US National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA), and the expanding industrial centers that define the area. During this time, traffic has steadily increased, and the old configuration simply wasn't built for the volume or the complexity of today's travel patterns. Maryland's Dept of Transportation Headquarters (MDOT SHA's) ongoing construction efforts aim to change that. By widening MD‑175, realigning ramps, improving drainage, adding noise walls, and upgrading stormwater systems, the project is setting the stage for a safer, smoother, and more reliable commute for thousands of daily drivers. It's a major undertaking, one that reflects the scale of investment Maryland continues to make in its transportation future.

To bring this vision to life, MDOT SHA turned to RE Pierson Construction, a contractor with a long history of delivering heavy civil projects across the Mid‑Atlantic. Their crews are known for tackling difficult soil conditions, complex highway work, and deep foundation challenges with precision and discipline. Jessup's mix of dense sands, gravel pockets, high groundwater, and occasional cobbles is the kind of environment where experience matters, especially when battered piles are involved. RE Pierson's reputation for strong field leadership and their ability to coordinate large‑scale earthwork and structural phases made them a natural fit for this interchange upgrade.

As the foundation work began, RE Pierson brought in an ICE® I‑30v2 diesel hammer to drive the 60‑foot battered piles required for the new ramp geometry. Whether sourced from their fleet or rented through the Mid‑Atlantic market, the I‑30 is a familiar sight on DOT jobs for good reason. Its long stroke and high energy output, reaching more than 76,000 ft‑lbs at rated settings, give it the muscle needed to push piles through the dense granular layers common in this part of Maryland. Even when working at an angle, the hammer maintains consistent performance, provided it's paired with stiff box leads and proper alignment systems. On this project, it proved to be exactly the right tool for the job, driving steel H-piles deep into the subsurface to support the interchange's new configuration.

Every improvement made here will ripple outward into the community. Commuters will spend less time in congestion. Military personnel and civilian workers traveling to Fort Meade will have a safer, more efficient route. Local businesses will benefit from better access and smoother traffic flow. These are the kinds of upgrades that quietly improve daily life, long after the construction crews have packed up and moved on.

International Construction Equipment is proud to support RE Pierson's work on this important project. Their commitment to quality construction and their skilled use of ICE® equipment help ensure that the foundations of this interchange are built to last. The community will feel the impact of their craftsmanship every time they pass through the improved corridor, and ICE® is grateful to play a role in helping Maryland move forward.

Livingston Avenue Bridge Replacement

66_JFleming_LivingstonAveMegaBridge_SkanskaDACollinsJV2 (1)1-62_JFleming_LivingstonAveMegaBridge_DACollins

The replacement of the Livingston Avenue Bridge marks one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in New York's Capital Region in more than a century. Built in 1902, the existing bridge has long served as a vital rail connection between Albany and Rensselaer, carrying a steady flow of Amtrak trains along the Northeast Corridor. Yet time has caught up with the structure. Its limited speed capacity, aging mechanical systems, and restricted maritime clearance have made replacement not just desirable, but essential. With a project value of roughly $635 million, the new bridge will introduce a modern two‑track vertical lift span capable of supporting higher‑speed rail service, while also delivering something the community has never had before: a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle path across this stretch of the Hudson River.

Because the bridge sits within a sensitive ecological zone, the entire construction schedule is shaped by the Hudson River's fish spawning window. In‑water work is permitted only from September through March, a period carefully chosen to protect species such as Atlantic sturgeon, American shad, and striped bass. This seasonal limitation requires the marine team to work with precision and efficiency, completing foundation operations within each year's narrow window before shifting to land‑based tasks in the spring and summer.

To meet these challenges, Skanska has partnered with D.A. Collins Construction Co., a subcontractor with decades of experience working on the Hudson and a reputation for excelling in complex marine environments. Their familiarity with the river, combined with a deep bench of marine operators and foundation specialists, makes them an ideal fit for a project where timing, environmental compliance, and technical execution must align perfectly. Under the leadership of Richard Aubin -Senior Project Manager, Ray Banks -Project Manager, Frank Staley -General Superintendent, and Jesse Older -Equipment Manager, the D.A. Collins team has mobilized two large barges, each outfitted with cranes, leads, and the specialized equipment needed to install the deep foundations that will support the new lift span.

Central to this effort is a suite of ICE® equipment selected specifically for the river's variable soils and the project's demanding schedule. The ICE® 44 and ICE® 66 vibratory hammers are being used to set the 30" (in) and 36" (in) pipe piles, their high‑frequency vibration allowing the piles to advance quickly through the upper layers of the riverbed. These vibratory hammers are powered through Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, which provide the flexibility, durability, and hydraulic efficiency needed for continuous marine operation. The hoses' resistance to abrasion and cold weather is particularly valuable during the winter months, when the fish window is open and temperatures on the Hudson can be unforgiving.

Once the piles reach depths where vibration alone can no longer achieve the required bearing, the team transitions to impact driving. For this final seating, two ICE® I‑62v2 diesel hammers are being used. Their high‑energy blows deliver the driving force needed to secure the 36‑inch pipe piles to their design elevations. Using a pair of I‑62v2 hammers allows D.A. Collins to maintain production across multiple work fronts, an essential advantage when every day of the fish window counts.

The combination of vibratory installation followed by diesel impact driving gives the team both speed and precision, an approach that respects the environmental constraints while ensuring the new bridge's foundations are built to last for generations. Every pile driven during this window lays out the groundwork for the future lift span, which will eventually be floated into place by barge and set atop the newly constructed piers. The work happening now; quietly, steadily, and often in harsh winter conditions; will support a structure expected to serve the region for the next hundred years.

Projects like this rely on the skill and dedication of marine contractors who understand both the river and the responsibility that comes with building in it. The Capital Region will benefit enormously from the improved rail service, safer navigation channel, and long‑awaited pedestrian access this bridge will provide. International Construction Equipment is proud to support D.A. Collins in this effort and extends sincere appreciation for their continued trust in ICE® equipment. Their craftsmanship on the Livingston Avenue Bridge will leave a lasting legacy for the community, the rail network, and everyone who depends on the Hudson River corridor.

ICE® at Work in Puerto Progreso

66_OPareja-PuertoProgresso_YucatanMEX

Puerto Progreso, Yucatán's primary deep‑sea gateway and the economic lifeline of the peninsula, is undergoing one of the most ambitious maritime upgrades in its history. This large‑scale expansion, valued between 7.2 and 7.9 billion pesos (about $374 million USD), aims to deepen navigation channels, expand terminal capacity, and construct an 80‑hectare platform capable of supporting larger vessels and increased cargo flow. As the state's primary deep‑sea gateway, Progreso handles the majority of imports and exports that sustain local industries and tourism. The current expansion, which is part of a multi‑year modernization effort, is expected to significantly boost regional trade and support long‑term development across the peninsula.

To execute this critical phase of marine foundation work, SG Cimentaciones was selected for their proven expertise in coastal and port infrastructure. Known throughout Mexico for delivering complex marine construction projects on tight timelines, the company brings decades of experience in pile driving, dredging support, and waterfront stabilization. Their familiarity with the unique soil and tidal conditions of the Gulf of Mexico made them an ideal partner for a project of this scale, ensuring both efficiency and precision in an environment where accuracy is essential.

For pile installation along the new retaining walls and structural extensions, the contractor deployed an ICE® 66 Vibratory Hammer paired with the ICE® 145BH clamp and powered by the ICE® 800 Power Unit. This configuration delivered the flexibility needed to handle a mix of sheet piles and structural steel members required for the port's upgraded foundation system. The 145BH clamp, designed specifically for high‑grip applications, uses a hydraulically actuated jaw system with precision‑machined contact surfaces to maintain uniform clamping pressure across varying pile thicknesses. Its high clamping force ensures efficient energy transfer from the hammer to the pile, reducing slippage and improving driving performance, which is especially important when transitioning between lighter sheet piles and heavier structural sections.

The ICE® 66 was selected for its high driving force, reliability in dense marine soils, and smooth operation that minimizes vibration transfer to nearby infrastructure. To further enhance performance in the harsh saltwater environment, the system was outfitted with Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses. These specialized hoses, standard across all ICE® Vibratory Hammers and Power Units, maintain stable hydraulic flow under high pressure and aid to resist corrosion and abrasion, as well as reducing internal turbulence that can degrade hammer efficiency over long operating cycles. ICE® 110C at Work on I‑70 KC

110C-JRiggs-ClarksonRademacherJV-I70-KansasCityMO2

The Improve I‑70 KC Project marks a major milestone in the evolution of one of Missouri's oldest and most heavily traveled interstate corridors. Originally constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, this stretch of I‑70 has carried generations of commuters, freight, and cross‑country travelers through the heart of Kansas City. After decades of wear and increasing congestion, the corridor is now undergoing a $237 million modernization, spanning five miles between Paseo Boulevard and U.S. 40/31st Street. The project includes the replacement of 15 bridges, rehabilitation of seven more, and the reconstruction of historically troublesome curves like Benton and Jackson to improve safety and traffic flow. Beginning in spring 2025 and continuing through spring 2028, this overhaul represents one of the most significant infrastructure reinvestments in the region in more than half a century.

To deliver a project of this scale, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) selected the Clarkson/Rademacher Joint Venture, a partnership built on deep regional experience and specialized technical capability. Clarkson Construction Company, founded in Kansas City in 1880, has shaped much of the city's modern infrastructure; from highways and interchanges to major civic structures.
