Fenway Foundation Feat by Ultra‑Lum
April 30, 2026
In the heart of Boston, just steps from the iconic Fenway Park and the well‑known Sal's Pizza, Ultra‑Lum was tasked with installing the foundation for a new high‑visibility billboard structure. The project required precision, power, and absolute reliability; especially given the tight urban footprint, heavy pedestrian traffic, and the dense network of utilities common to historic Boston neighborhoods.
Ultra‑Lum is the preferred billboard installer in the Northeast with decades of experience performing foundation work in challenging environments. Their experience working in constrained urban spaces made them the ideal contractor for a project requiring both technical expertise and logistical finesse.

To drive the oversized caissons, Ultra‑Lum bought and used a brand‑new ICE® 70 Vibratory Hammer; the first unit ever manufactured. This hammer represents the next generation of high‑energy vibratory technology. With an eccentric moment of up to 7000 in/lbs and an operating frequency engineered for both power and control, the ICE® 70 delivers the driving energy needed for large‑diameter caissons while maintaining stability in sensitive urban environments. Its hydraulic system, designed for high flow and high pressure, ensures consistent performance even under demanding load conditions. Supporting the hammer was the durable and flexible Hydrauli‑Flex™ hose, engineered to withstand demanding jobsite conditions and ensure consistent power delivery throughout the installation.
To complete this job, Ultra‑Lum first installed an 84" (in) caisson and then excavated it to a depth of 16' (ft). They followed this by then installing a second caisson, measuring 54" (in), that extended 60' (ft) deep. Next, the space between the two caissons was filled with concrete to provide the additional ballast required for long‑term stability, as a 48" (in) diameter x 60' (ft) long steel pipe with a 1½" (in) wall thickness was used to connect the foundation to the digital screen structure. That 60' (ft) lateral support arm extended over Sal's Pizza. Together, these elements form a critical foundation designed to anchor the billboard securely even during the toughest Nor'easters. The success of this installation was essential not only for structural integrity but also for ensuring long‑term safety in one of the city's busiest commercial corridors.
International Construction Equipment (ICE®), which proudly manufactures all of its vibratory hammers in the United States, extends its appreciation to Ultra‑Lum for trusting the first‑ever ICE® 70 on such a prominent project. The local community and nearby businesses have also expressed their thanks for the professionalism and efficiency shown throughout the installation, ensuring the work was completed safely and with minimal disruption. And as the new billboard rises over Sal's, it's safe to say this foundation is as solid as the Fenway slice is famous!

A Model for Modern Marine Construction- Wando Welch Terminal UPDATE
April 16, 2026One of the busiest container terminals on the East Coast recently became the stage for a marine construction effort that demanded accuracy, adaptability, and uninterrupted port operations. Russell Marine's sheet pile toe wall installation at the at the Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is now featured in PileDriver magazine and International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is proud to have played a key role in the project's success.
Completed two to three months ahead of schedule, the work delivered a critical submerged structure while maintaining full terminal functionality, protecting one of the region's most important economic gateways.
The project required the installation of 861 steel sheet piles, NZ 38 and NZ 28 sections, forming a 3,800‑foot toe wall located approximately 48' (ft) below the water's surface. This wall will support current operations and future dredging efforts as the Port of Charleston prepares for larger vessels.
Initial plans called for a larger hammer, but real‑world conditions quickly proved that precision mattered more than raw power. Russell Marine transitioned to the ICE® 66B vibratory hammer, paired with a 60' (ft) extension, to achieve the control needed for underwater placement in heavy currents and a constrained footprint.
The 66B's responsiveness allowed crews to maintain interlock integrity and alignment, which is essential for a linear installation of this scale. The hammer's performance was further supported by Hydrauli‑Flex™ hose, which provided the durability and pressure stability required for continuous marine operations. With hydraulic systems running biodegradable oils to protect the environment, high‑quality hose performance was critical to preventing leaks and minimizing downtime.
The Wando Welch Terminal operates three berths, yet the project footprint occupied less than half of one. That meant every movement had to be carefully sequenced to avoid interfering with vessel loading, unloading, and logistics operations.
Maintaining uninterrupted port activity was non‑negotiable. Any delay could have had far‑reaching economic impacts.
To support precision driving, crews used practical field tools such as "tattle tale" ropes to monitor sheet behavior in real time. Heavy currents added complexity, requiring constant control and coordination throughout the driving process.
Russell Marine also collaborated on a custom pile driving template system designed specifically for the project's constraints. The system eliminated the need for falsework piles, reduced material and time requirements, allowed safe passage of ship‑to‑shore cranes, and integrated anchor points, handrails, and ladders for crew safety. This thoughtful engineering ensured that construction could proceed efficiently while maintaining the high safety standards required in a busy marine environment.
With schedule pressure and port continuity at stake, minimizing downtime was essential. The team implemented on‑site strategies to rapidly address equipment needs, including immediate access to replacement hydraulic components. This approach kept production steady and prevented delays that could have affected both the project and terminal operations.
The Wando Welch Terminal toe wall installation demonstrates how driven sheet pile systems supported by adaptable equipment like the ICE® 66B can succeed in complex, real‑world marine environments. From underwater installation in strong currents to working within an active terminal, the project highlights the importance of aligning design, equipment, and strategy with site‑specific demands.
This update builds on ICE®'s earlier coverage of the project, showing how innovation, flexibility, and dependable equipment continue to push boundaries in marine construction.

ICE® Supports Temporary Trestle Construction: Dutch John Cut High Speed Rail UPDATE
April 13, 2026California's High‑Speed Rail program continues to reshape the state's infrastructure, and one of its most critical behind‑the‑scenes efforts is now highlighted in the latest issue of PileDriver magazine. The Dutch John Cut trestle project, part of Construction Package 2‑3 in the Central Valley, showcases the essential role of temporary works and the deep foundation expertise required to build them. ICE® is proud to see our equipment at the center of this milestone.
Forefront Deep Foundations, a Newport Beach‑based DBE/SBE contractor specializing in driven pile systems, was tasked with installing 172 large‑diameter pipe piles to support two temporary work trestles spanning Dutch John Cut and Cole Slough. These trestles provide the stable platforms needed for cranes weighing more than 1.4 million pounds as they set precast concrete tub girders for the permanent high‑speed rail bridge.
To meet the aggressive schedule and maintain alignment in challenging river‑corridor soils, Forefront relied on the ICE® 44B Vibratory Hammer to advance each 36" (in) pipe pile approximately 40' (ft) before final driving with an impact hammer. The 44B delivered the speed, control, and consistency required to establish position within the custom template system, a critical first step in achieving the project's demanding tip elevations.
Supporting the hammer's performance was the use of Hydrauli‑Flex™ hose, providing the durability, flexibility, and high‑pressure reliability needed for continuous operation. In an environmentally sensitive floodplain, Hydrauli‑Flex™'s robust construction and compatibility with biodegradable hydraulic fluids helped reduce risk while maintaining peak efficiency.
Although temporary, the trestles must withstand enormous loads, repeated equipment movement, and strict environmental oversight. Driven piles were selected for their immediate capacity, predictable behavior in variable soils, and more importantly their ability to be extracted once the permanent bridge is complete.
Forefront's custom‑fabricated pile templates improved installation accuracy and reduced layout time, ensuring the trestles could safely support the heavy cranes constructing the new rail infrastructure.
The Dutch John Cut trestle is part of the broader Fresno‑to‑Bakersfield segment of California's High‑Speed Rail program; a 65‑mile stretch featuring viaducts, grade separations, and major bridge structures. With more than 100 miles under active construction, the program depends on specialty contractors and reliable equipment to keep progress moving.
Deep foundation work like this rarely gets the spotlight, yet it is the backbone of every major milestone. The temporary platforms built on ICE®‑driven piles are enabling the permanent bridge to rise and once the trestles are removed, little evidence will remain of the critical role they played.
ICE® is honored to support contractors like Forefront Deep Foundations as they deliver the precision, power, and environmental stewardship required on projects of this scale.

Pier 1 Rises Again
April 2, 2026
The Port of Davisville at Quonset Point has long been one of Rhode Island's most valuable economic engines, serving as a major gateway for auto imports and a growing hub for offshore wind logistics. Just across Narragansett Bay from the waters where the Gaspee once ran aground, this coastline has quietly shaped the region's maritime identity for centuries. Today, the full replacement of Pier 1 continues that legacy. Originally built in the 1940s, the pier is undergoing a multi‑year reconstruction as part of a broader port modernization effort valued at more than $200 million, with Pier 1 itself supported by tens of millions in state and federal funding. Construction began in 2022 and is progressing in phases through 2026, ensuring the port can safely accommodate larger vessels, heavier cargo, and the growing offshore wind industry.
J.F. Brennan Company was selected to lead this critical marine foundation and pier reconstruction effort, as they were a natural fit given their deep experience in complex waterfront environments. Brennan has built a national reputation for excellence in heavy civil marine construction, environmental remediation, and underwater work, making them uniquely equipped to manage the challenges of a full pier replacement in an active port. Their commitment to safety, precision, and innovation has made them a trusted partner on major infrastructure projects across the country, and their expertise is especially valuable on a site with both historical significance and modern logistical demands.
Executing the high‑energy pile‑driving program at Pier 1 required a carefully matched suite of ICE® equipment capable of meeting the project's geotechnical and structural demands. To meet these requirements, Brennan has incorporated a newly purchased ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammer from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) into the operation, taking advantage of its high eccentric moment and variable‑frequency control to efficiently advance the steel piles forming the pier's primary load‑bearing system. Integrated with an ICE® Hydro‑Lock Adapter equipped with an ICE® 140 clamp; the ICE® 44 is furthered enhanced by Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, ensuring reliable hydraulic performance, minimized pressure loss, and prevented excessive heat buildup during extended driving operations.
While ICE® vibratory hammers play a critical role in efficient pile driving operations, their performance and safety depend heavily on using the correct accessories. Using ICE® specialty clamps while driving ensures a secure, stable grip on the pile, preventing slippage and minimizing vibration loss so the hammer can deliver maximum energy into the ground. Equally important are the ICE® Hydro‑Lock Adapters, which allow operators to switch between clamps quickly and safely while maintaining consistent hydraulic pressure. Together, these components not only improve driving accuracy and productivity but also extend equipment life by reducing unnecessary wear and tear on the bolt holes. Incorporating the right clamps and adapters ultimately leads to smoother operations, reduced downtime, and a more reliable foundation installation process.
To meet required capacity on the 24" (in) pipe piles being driven, Brennan is supplementing the vibratory setup with a rented ICE® I‑46v2 Diesel Hammer paired with ICE® Model 55 Power Pack. The I‑46 delivers substantial single‑blow impact energy through its diesel‑combustion cycle, which is an essential capability for penetrating the dense glacial till and compacted marine sediments characteristic of Narragansett Bay.
Together, these systems provide the energy range and control necessary to sustain production rates, achieve required embedment depths, and maintain strict structural tolerances throughout the foundation installation phase.
As the new Pier 1 rises, the surrounding community stands to benefit from increased port capacity, improved infrastructure resilience, and continued economic growth. International Construction Equipment extends its appreciation to J.F. Brennan Company for their dedication and craftsmanship on this transformative project. Their work strengthens a waterfront that has supported Rhode Island for generations, and ICE® is proud to contribute equipment and expertise to a project that will serve the region well into the future.
