Advancing the I-81 Transformation
June 11, 2026
The reconstruction of the I-81 corridor in Syracuse marks one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in Central New York's recent history. Contract 4 supports the broader effort to replace outdated highway structures and prepare the region for a modern cashless tolling system that will improve safety and reduce congestion. This work is part of a multi-year investment that is reshaping how residents, commuters, and commercial traffic move through the city. As construction progresses, the improvements promise long lasting benefits for the surrounding communities and the thousands of travelers who rely on I-81 every day.
The CNY Alliance Joint Venture, which includes Economy Paving along with several other experienced New York contractors, was selected to deliver this critical phase of the project. The JV brings together a strong combination of regional expertise, deep foundation capability, and a proven track record of completing complex transportation work across the state. Economy Paving's long history in Central New York and its familiarity with the soil conditions and structural demands of the Syracuse area make the team particularly well suited for the deep foundation components of Contract 4.
To support the installation of pipe pile and sheeting, the JV is utilizing a mix of ICE® equipment that includes both contractor owned and rented units. Economy Paving brought its own ICE® 28 Vibratory Hammer and ICE® I-30 Diesel Impact Hammer to the site, both of which have been reliable performers in the dense soils common to the region. To increase production capacity, the team supplemented its fleet with a rented ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammer. The vibratory systems are paired with Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses which provide smooth hydraulic flow and responsive control during pile placement. The diesel hammer operates independently of hydraulic hoses and supplies the final driving energy needed to seat piles to their required depth. Together, these tools allow the JV to maintain steady progress while ensuring each pile meets the project's structural requirements.
As the I-81 transformation continues, the work completed under Contract 4 will serve as a foundation for safer travel and more efficient movement throughout Syracuse. The community benefits from improved infrastructure while the region gains a stronger and more resilient transportation network. International Construction Equipment. Inc. (ICE®) extends its appreciation to the CNY Alliance JV and the dedicated crews from Economy Paving whose commitment and craftsmanship are helping bring this ambitious project to life. Their efforts continue to strengthen the roads that connect Central New York's future.

Breaking Ground Beneath Manhattan
June 8, 2026
The 2nd Avenue Subway Extension represents one of the most critical infrastructure investments currently underway in New York City; a project designed to ease transit congestion and finally bring modern access to neighborhoods that have waited generations for it. Fortunately, that wait is nearing its end. Scheduled to break ground in July 2026, work will unfold beneath some of Manhattan's busiest corridors, where the city's legendary "Manhattan Schist" and a literal labyrinth of dense underground utilities create an environment of extreme engineering difficulty.
To navigate these high-stakes conditions, Gateway Civil was selected for this pivotal phase. They were the clear choice due to their deep-tier mastery of underground construction and their specialized ability to maintain safety within highly restricted urban footprints. Gateway brings a level of planning discipline and leadership that is essential for a project where surgical precision and complex logistics must work in perfect alignment. As President Alex Concannon notes, the "setup" is often the project's most defining hurdle, and it is exactly where Gateway Civil's mobilization expertise provides a distinct advantage.
To reinforce the new tunnel section, Gateway Civil will deploy a Comacchio MC8 drilling rig, supplied by International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). The team will be tasked with installing 13-5/8" diameter micropiles totaling 5,000 vertical feet, alongside an additional 1,200 vertical feet of 9-5/8" diameter piles and stabilizing tiebacks. This environment is unforgiving: the crew must work entirely sub-grade with low headroom and restricted airflow, where every piece of equipment and material must be craned down into the tunnel. Furthermore, the sheer hardness of the "Manhattan" rock requires a specialized hammer system to breach the surface before drilling can even commence.
These constraints are precisely why the MC8 is the right tool for the job. Despite its compact footprint, the MC8 is a powerhouse, featuring a high-performance 100 kW (134 HP) engine and a rotary head capable of delivering up to 900 daNm of torque. This allows it to maneuver through low-clearance zones that would sideline larger rigs while maintaining the power to chew through dense rock. Its advanced hydraulic system and flexible mast configuration, featuring a telescopic stroke and 360-degree joint, seamlessly support both micro-pile and tieback installation at challenging angles. Combined with durable components like Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, the MC8 is engineered for maximum uptime in the harshest subterranean conditions.
Together, Gateway Civil's technical expertise and the rugged capabilities of the MC8 will help deliver one of New York City's most impactful transit upgrades. This work doesn't just represent an engineering feat; it represents a promise kept to the local residents who will soon benefit from a faster, more connected commute. ICE® extends its sincere thanks to the community for their patience and to the entire Gateway Civil team for their partnership and commitment to excellence on this landmark project.

Blue Iron is Supercalifragilisticexpialidoc-ICE®
June 4, 2026
The workday begins early on Maple Road in Bay Lake, where the backstage edge of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World (WDW) has recently become a hub of heavy civil activity. This quiet service road, normally used by support vehicles and utility crews, now serves as the northern staging area for the World Drive North Phase III expansion. It is here that Blue Iron Foundations and Shoring, LLC is driving steel deep into the saturated Florida soil, and it is here that ICE® equipment is proving its value with every sheet placed.
Blue Iron, headquartered in West Sacramento and operating across the United States, has earned a national reputation for its expertise in earth retention and deep foundation systems. Their teams work regularly throughout Florida, where high water tables and unstable soils demand both technical precision and dependable equipment. Although Blue Iron has completed many significant projects across the state, this marks their first major foundation and shoring contract directly tied to WDW property. Their selection for such a high-profile effort reflects the confidence that project leaders have in their ability to deliver safe, stable, and consistent results in some of the most challenging ground conditions in the region.
For this project, Blue Iron Foundations is driving 1,600 linear feet of steel sheet piling to build MSE retaining walls for the World Drive North Phase III expansion at Walt Disney World, utilizing an ICE® 22 Vibratory Hammer for pile installation. This critical infrastructure work, supporting a major realignment of World Drive and Floridian Way, is set to continue through December 2027 to facilitate future park expansion.
To meet the demands of the Reedy Creek basin, Blue Iron chose to reach out to International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) to rent the ICE® 22 Vibratory Hammer powered by the ICE® 335 unit and paired with the reliable ICE® 140C Sheeting Clamp. The system arrived on Maple Road in the early Spring of 2026, ready for the work ahead. Consistent power is delivered to the ICE® 22 through its patented Hydrauli-Flex™ hose, a durable and responsive line that ensures dependable flow between the hammer and the power unit. This connection allows the 22 to deliver steady vibration energy while the 140C clamp maintains a secure grip on each sheet pile. Together, the system provides the precision and reliability needed for deep foundation work in wet and shifting terrain.
The broader project, led by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, is reshaping the roadway network that supports the Magic Kingdom. By realigning World Drive and Floridian Way, the project opens a significant parcel of land behind Big Thunder Mountain, an area Imagineers have already identified for future expansion. However, before any new structures or attractions can rise, the ground must first be stabilized and the water controlled. That responsibility falls to crews like Blue Iron, whose national experience and growing Florida presence made them a natural fit for this milestone project.
As pile driving operations begin, each driving sequence starts with the ICE® 22 Vibratory Hammer engaging the next sheet pile and delivering controlled vibration to advance the steel through layers of saturated sand, organics, and dense subsurface material. The ICE® 335 power unit maintains the hydraulic output required for continuous penetration, while the 140C clamp applies a high force grip that keeps the sheet aligned and prevents any lateral movement during driving. As the piles reach design depth, they interlock to create rigid cofferdam walls, deep trench support systems, and long-term embankment stabilization structures that will carry the load of the new roadway and protect the utility corridors running beneath it. The process requires precise energy transfer, accurate pile positioning, and equipment capable of maintaining performance under fluctuating soil and groundwater pressures, which is exactly what the ICE® system is engineered to achieve.
From a distance, the operation may look like another construction site, but those who understand the process know that this is where the future of the Magic Kingdom begins. Long before guests experience new lands or attractions, the foundation must be secured. Every sheet pile driven by ICE® equipment is part of that foundation. It is the unseen beginning of the next chapter in this iconic destination's growth.
ICE® is thrilled to support Blue Iron as they shape the ground that will support the future of Walt Disney World, Florida. The work is complex, the soil is challenging, and the expectations are high, but with the right team and the right equipment in place, progress moves forward one sheet at a time.

A Recipe for a Stronger Waterfront
June 1, 2026Throughout the years the Camden waterfront has seen many seasons of change, but few as meaningful as the work completed there just recently. For more than a century, Campbell Soup Company has anchored its operations in Camden, New Jersey, and the warehouse district along the shoreline has long been a hub of steady movement. These buildings were added during the company's twentieth century expansion, replacing the original nineteenth century structures and supporting generations of workers who kept the iconic brand moving. Over time, the low deck that bordered the waterfront began to show its age. What had once been a reliable working platform was now a failing structure that posed risks to both safety and daily operations.
By the time engineers assessed the site, it was clear that the shoreline needed immediate attention. Urgency shaped every decision, as this was not a project that could wait. The deck supported active warehouse operations, and the surrounding community depended on the uninterrupted flow of goods. Restoring the shoreline meant protecting a vital part of Camden's industrial landscape and ensuring that the area remained safe for the people who worked there every day.
Commerce Construction stepped into the project with confidence and clarity. The company has been a trusted name in marine and deep foundation work since 1996, supported by a heritage of waterfront builders whose experience stretches back generations. Their crews are known throughout the mid-Atlantic for handling complex marine environments with precision, and their leadership remains closely involved in field operations to ensure every project meets the highest standards. That combination of hands-on craftsmanship and modern engineering made Commerce the natural choice for a shoreline restoration that demanded both technical skill and respect for an active industrial site.
The solution called for a new 750' (ft) steel sheet pile bulkhead supported by steel HP A frame structures. To meet the tight schedule and ensure consistent production, Commerce relied on an ICE® 110 vibratory driver extractor, rented from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). This powerful machine provided the power needed to drive each steel sheet pile with accuracy, even in the narrow working corridor beside the active warehouses. The 110's steady force performed as expected and was fully supported by Hydrauli- flex™ hoses that delivered smooth energy transfer and reduced strain on the system. This setup allowed the crew to maintain momentum day after day, easily achieving the depth and alignment required for a bulkhead of this scale.
As the final sheets were driven and the new wall took shape, the transformation became immediately visible. What had been a failing shoreline only months earlier now stands reinforced and ready for decades of service. Commerce completed the project ahead of schedule and within budget, a result that reflected their discipline and their commitment to the community they were serving.
Thanks to Commerce's expert crews the deck is safe again, and Campbell Soup Company leadership has expressed genuine appreciation for the care taken to protect their facilities and keep operations moving throughout construction. ICE® is happy to have provided some of the tools that played a key role in restoring a shoreline that has supported Camden families for generations.
Now that the project has been completed, the waterfront stands renewed and ready for the years ahead. The result serves as a clear reminder of what can be achieved when skilled contractors, dependable equipment, and a shared commitment to the community come together. Bravo!
