A Key Milestone

The Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement project stands as one of the most critical infrastructure undertakings in the history of Maryland and the broader American supply chain. Since the tragic collapse of the original span in early 2024, the absence of this vital crossing has deeply impacted the Baltimore metropolitan area, disrupting the daily commutes of over 30,000 drivers and severing a key hazardous materials route around the city. Rebuilding this modern landmark requires an estimated investment of over $1 billion, with a targeted completion deadline set for late 2030. Crews are currently working around the clock in the deep, brackish waters of the Patapsco River, executing a monumental engineering feat to restore the city skyline and secure the economic vitality of the Port of Baltimore for generations to come.

Weeks Marine took charge of this high-stakes overwater construction, bringing a legendary century-old legacy of marine engineering expertise to the project. Founded in 1919, the company has evolved from a small bunkering operation into one of the largest and most versatile marine contractors in North America, renowned for mastering ultra-heavy lift logistics. They deployed their crown jewel asset, the massive 500 ton rotating crane barge Weeks 533, which provides the unmatched stability and lifting capacity necessary to handle the immense components needed for the new pier foundations. Their extensive history of completing complex coastal and harbor developments under tight regulatory scrutiny made them the definitive choice to spearhead this massive recovery effort.

To master the challenging riverbed geology, the contractor strategically staged an ICE® 200C Vibratory Driver/Extractor right on the barge deck next to its dedicated ICE® 1600E Power Unit. Generating a combined 1600 HP through twin Caterpillar C18 engines, this heavy-duty power pack satisfies strict EPA emissions regulations while supplying the extreme hydraulic flow required to command the site. Selected for its exceptional dual-purpose utility, the paired system delivers an impressive centrifugal force of 640 tons, and a massive 250-ton standard line pull for extracting. Operators use the vibratory hammer to swiftly buzz temporary outer casings and template anchor spuds through the soft, loose upper layers of river silt, establishing a secure workspace before the impact hammer on site drives the permanent caissons to bedrock. The vibratory system also utilizes advanced Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses to ensure seamless, high-pressure fluid delivery and optimal operational efficiency while managing the intense, high-frequency vibrations required to shake the temporary structures loose from the mud during the extraction phase.

International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is deeply proud to support Weeks Marine as they safely and efficiently restore this monumental lifeline for the state of Maryland. The surrounding communities, along with the thousands of workers and daily commuters who rely on this harbor corridor, owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the iron-willed crews working tirelessly on the water. Every heavy pile successfully driven brings the entire eastern seaboard one step closer to a fully restored transportation network. The collaborative spirit and technical excellence demonstrated on this job site serve as a powerful testament to the resilience of American industrial engineering.
