Adaptability in Action
December 18, 2025
In the rolling hills of the Northeastern United States, a private client faced a serious challenge: a steep embankment bordering their property had begun to show signs of instability. The slope overlooked a roadway that connected several historic neighborhoods, making stabilization critical not only for the client's investment but also for the safety of the surrounding community. With a project budget in the low millions and a tight timeline of just a few months before winter weather set in, the work carried both urgency and regional importance.
Morrison Engineers, a firm with a proven track record in geo-structural design‑build projects across the Northeast, was selected to perform this delicate job. Known for their ability to adapt to complex soil conditions and deliver turnkey solutions, Morrison Engineers has become a trusted partner for both public and private clients. Their portfolio includes slope stabilization, excavation support, and foundation reinforcement; making them the natural choice for a project where safety, speed, and technical expertise were paramount like this one.
To install the soil nails, Morrison Engineers rented a Comacchio SpA MCE‑45 mast attachment from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). The MCE‑45 was selected for its versatility in tight access conditions and its ability to handle challenging ground. Designed as a compact yet powerful drilling mast, the MCE‑45 can be mounted on a variety of carriers, making it ideal for projects where mobility and adaptability are essential. Its robust feed system delivers steady torque and thrust, enabling efficient penetration through mixed soils and variable strata. Initially, the team planned to drill with augers, but when they encountered dense gravel, they quickly adapted, switching to advancing casing and converting to a duplex drill method using air. Thanks to the equipment's modular design, the change was as simple as swapping a flange plate, demonstrating the mast's flexibility in real-world conditions. Outfitted with Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, the system provided reliable hydraulic performance, ensuring smooth drilling and efficient soil nail installation despite the unexpected ground conditions. The MCE‑45's combination of compact design, hydraulic precision, and modular adaptability proved critical in keeping the project on schedule while navigating the complexities of the site.
With the soil nails now in place, the slope stands secure, protecting both the client's property and the nearby roadway that so many residents rely on. The community expressed relief knowing that the risk of erosion and slope failure had been addressed before the harsh Northeast winter. International Construction Equipment is elated to have supported Morrison Engineers on this project and extends its thanks for their professionalism and adaptability, demonstrating once again how the right contractor and the right equipment can safeguard both private investment and public safety.
