Advanced Machinery Meets Green Infrastructure

When building the framework for the future of clean energy, the foundation must be unyielding. Commerce Construction recently demonstrated this principle at the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (EASRCC) wind turbine training facility near Hammonton, New Jersey. The project serves as a premier showcase of what happens when skilled union labor, advanced machinery, and premium domestic manufacturing align. The expansion of the Thomas C. Ober Training Center near Hammonton, New Jersey, is moving forward at a rapid pace as a monumental leap forward for America's clean energy sector. Serving as a crucial hub for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Pile Drivers and Divers, this state-of-the-art facility is taking shape to deliver critical, hands-on instruction in heavy underwater construction, rigging, and safety standards. By incorporating specialized assets like a full-sized decommissioned wind turbine, the site is being prepared to train a highly skilled local workforce to construct and maintain the burgeoning offshore wind sector along the Atlantic coast. The deep foundations currently being laid here will ensure that future generations of tradespeople have a secure, world-class environment to master their crafts.

Commerce Construction is on-site as the chosen contractor to bring this vital training structure to life, pulling from its deep well of marine and heavy industrial construction expertise. Known for taking on complex waterfront infrastructure and logistical challenges, the firm is providing the exact technical knowledge required to meet rigorous deep foundation safety standards. Their field crews are bringing a combination of seasoned craftsmanship and unmatched operational professionalism to this active site, making them the ideal partner to build a center dedicated to those very same traits. By managing challenging driving criteria with precision, they continue to solidify their reputation as a premier builder of regional infrastructure.

To drive the heavy 24" (in) diameter steel pipe piles manufactured by Nucor Skyline deep into the New Jersey earth, Commerce Construction is deploying its own specialized ICE® IP-5 Hydraulic Impact hammer, previously purchased from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). Utilizing this in-house machinery allows the team to maximize operational control and efficiency while meeting strict structural foundation specifications required to support the massive wind turbine mockup. The hydraulic impact hammer is delivering up to 44,000 ft-lbs of energy per blow to seat the robust pipe piles deeply and securely, relying on high-pressure Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses to smoothly transfer the power necessary for the intense driving cycle. This advanced setup allows the crew to maintain clean, precise structural alignment while meeting deep foundation guidelines without a hitch.

The ongoing progress of this foundation's work stands as a testament to the powerful synergy between domestic manufacturing, forward-thinking contractors, and the regional labor community. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and the local offshore wind industry extend their sincere appreciation to Commerce Construction for erecting a structural gateway that will elevate trade education for decades to come. International Construction Equipment also shares its gratitude with the team for trusting ICE® machinery to conquer the deep driving demands of this landmark project.
