All Aboard for a Major Modernization

Beneath the bustling streets of downtown St. Louis, Missouri, a historic piece of infrastructure is getting a much-needed upgrade. The Union Station Tunnel, originally constructed in 1902 by the Terminal Railroad Association, once served as a vital subway access point for 36 rail lines arriving at the iconic Union Station. Now, more than a century later, the tunnel is being rehabilitated to support modern transit needs while preserving its legacy. The project, led by Bi-State Development and Metro Transit, includes structural reconstruction, communications upgrades, and emergency systems enhancements; all designed to ensure the tunnel remains a reliable part of the city's MetroLink commuter rail system for generations to come.

Nicholson Construction, a nationally recognized geotechnical contractor, was selected to perform critical foundation work within the tunnel. Known for their expertise in complex underground environments, Nicholson is installing micropiles to reinforce the aging structure. Their work is essential to stabilizing the tunnel's concrete ceiling slab and steel support columns, especially given the limited overhead clearance and the need to avoid disruption to the active rail and parking infrastructure above.

To tackle the challenging subsurface conditions, ranging from clay to limestone, the experts at Nicholson turned to International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for specialized drilling equipment. On site, crews are using a rented Comacchio MC4D, a compact hydraulic drilling rig designed specifically for confined spaces like tunnels and basements. The MC4D's modular hydraulic circuits and optional telescopic mast accessory allow for precise drilling in low-clearance environments, making it ideal for this job. Its ability to accommodate rotary and rotary-percussive drilling systems ensures it can adapt to the varying geology beneath St. Louis paired with the rig's separate power pack that features Hydrauli-Flex® hoses and customizable controls further enhances the MC4D's performance in tight, urban job sites.

As the project moves forward, the St. Louis community can look forward to a safer, more resilient transit corridor that honors the city's rich rail history. International Construction Equipment is proud to support Nicholson Construction in this effort, providing the tools needed to keep progress on track. With modern engineering and historic preservation working hand in hand, the Union Station Tunnel is right on schedule for a new era of service. Bravo, Nicholson!
