Panama City's shipbuilding industry continues to strengthen its national significance as Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) undertakes a major, multi-phase infrastructure expansion at its Nelson Street government shipyard. Renowned for delivering advanced vessels to the U.S. Coast Guard and commercial fleets, ESG is enhancing its waterfront capabilities to accommodate larger vessels and meet the demands of several high-profile military and commercial contracts.

The most recent phase of the expansion, scheduled for completion in 2025, includes the addition of 1,000 linear feet of bulkhead and a 120-foot extension of the launch way. These upgrades will significantly increase berthing space and enable the facility to accommodate vessels exceeding 500 feet in length; positioning ESG to support future U.S. Navy projects and other large-scale maritime operations.

To execute the marine infrastructure portion of the project, ESG selected RJ Gorman Construction, a locally based contractor with extensive experience in heavy civil and marine construction. RJ Gorman was tasked with seawall installation and other critical marine construction activities that support the expanded bulkhead and waterfront operations. The company's proven expertise in building hurricane-resilient waterfronts, supporting military installations, and managing complex coastal developments has made it a strategic partner for ESG's expansion.

On site, RJ Gorman deployed a rented ICE® 612 Vibratory Driver/Extractor from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®), mounted securely on a barge crane to drive the foundational components into place. Engineered to deliver 1,200 inch-pounds of eccentric moment, the ICE® 612 is recognized as one of the most versatile vibratory hammers in its class, capable of handling demanding pile-driving operations with efficiency and precision. Its high-frequency design minimizes vibration transmission to surrounding structures, making it particularly well-suited for sensitive marine and waterfront environments where stability and environmental impact are critical concerns. Paired with Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, the system ensured smooth hydraulic flow and reduced downtime, allowing operators to maintain consistent driving force even under variable tidal conditions. The ICE® 612's combination of raw power, reliability, and fine control provided the confidence needed to set deep foundation elements quickly and safely, reinforcing its reputation as the industry standard for marine construction projects.

International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) proudly thanks RJ Gorman Marine Construction for their expert execution and continued trust in our deep foundation solutions. We also extend our appreciation to Eastern Shipbuilding Group for their visionary leadership and commitment to excellence. This collaboration not only reinforces Panama City's role as a cornerstone of America's maritime future but also exemplifies the strength of local partnerships in building enduring infrastructure. Together, we are shaping a legacy that extends from the waterfront to the workforce. Amazing work, to all involved!
