For generations, the Mississippi River hummed with energy at Port Sulphur, Louisiana. This stretch of the river had once been a vital artery for American commerce, but by the mid-2010s, a new era was dawning. The deep-water offshore industry was booming, and the vessels demanding dockage were growing larger, heavier, and more advanced than ever before. 

To build a dock capable of withstanding both the crushing weight of industrial operations and the volatile Louisiana elements, ECO could not hire just any contractor. They selected the Thibodaux-based outfit Sealevel Construction, whose reputation for self-performing complex heavy civil and marine projects made them the premier choice. Sealevel brought a major competitive advantage to the table: an elite, company-owned marine fleet of deep foundation equipment. By utilizing their own specialized marine assets, Sealevel completely eliminated scheduling delays, ensured rigid quality control, and maintained absolute authority over the volatile river waters. Because the Mississippi River silt offers little natural support, the engineering plan demanded driving massive, deep-penetration steel pipe piles into the riverbed to secure the wharf and its towering mooring dolphins.  

To conquer the unforgiving river bottom, Sealevel deployed its heavy-duty deep foundation machinery from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). Floating on a massive, rigged barge, a brand-new crane uncoiled its boom against the Louisiana sky, providing unmatched lifting capacity and precision stability over the water. Hanging from the crane was the heart of the driving operation: an ICE® 44 Vibratory Pile Driver. Built for brutal, continuous marine duty, this high-performance hammer boasts a robust eccentric moment of 4,400 in-lbs and generates immense centrifugal force designed to loosen surrounding soil particles and reduce penetration resistance. The vibrator was driven by a roaring, high-efficiency ICE® 595 Power Unit paired with robust Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, specifically engineered to withstand extreme hydraulic pressures while maintaining environmental safety over the open water. 

Armed with this raw power, Sealevel used the ICE® 44 hammer to spearhead the heavy lifting across multiple phases of the job. Day after day, the crane hoisted the massive steel pipe piles into place, while the vibratory hammer flawlessly executed the installation of massive mooring dolphins right in the volatile currents of the Mississippi River. The crew didn't stop driving at the water's edge; they also utilized the powerful hammer for the intricate installation of bridge piles, capsills, heavy-duty structural decks, and pedestrian gangways that tie the marine terminal together. 

On shore, the equipment proved equally versatile, supporting the critical site work and access road development needed to connect the new deep-water facility to the mainland logistics network. Once the robust pile foundation was safely locked into place, Sealevel's crews transitioned to the structural phase, self-performing the intricate formwork, pouring tons of structural concrete, and fabricating the heavy steel decking to tie the entire wharf system together. When the job was done, the Edison Chouest Wharf stood as a monument to modern marine engineering; a rugged, deep-water fortress born from local expertise and powered by the finest fleet on the Gulf Coast. 

Today, the completed project stands as a point of pride for the local maritime community, driving economic growth and supporting hundreds of regional jobs. The surrounding Plaquemines Parish community has expressed immense gratitude for the infrastructure upgrade, which secures the area's position as a premier global logistics hub, while the team at International Construction Equipment (ICE®) remains proud and grateful to see their flagship deep foundation technology chosen to anchor another historic milestone along the Mississippi River.
