Bridging the Basin
July 12, 2026
The replacement of the Illinois Route 1 bridges over the Embarras River overflow near Lawrenceville represents a vital investment in the region's infrastructure, addressing two critical structures that have reached the end of their functional lifespans. Backed by a $21.5 million investment from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), this major initiative ensures the long-term safety and connectivity of a crucial regional corridor. The project utilizes a carefully staged construction approach designed to minimize disruption, with the first major phase scheduled to wrap up in December 2026 and final completion anticipated in December 2027. By modernizing these crossings, the state is actively preventing future structural deficiencies, improving weight capacity for commercial transport, and creating a smoother, more reliable route for thousands of daily motorists who depend on this thoroughfare.
To execute a project of this scale and complexity, the state selected Sangamo Construction Company, an industry leader with a deep history of delivering heavy highway and bridge infrastructure. Founded in Springfield, Illinois, Sangamo has spent decades building a stellar reputation for handling technically demanding earthwork, concrete structures, and marine-adjacent builds. Their deep roots in Illinois infrastructure give them unmatched familiarity with regional geology and river systems, making them the ideal partner for navigating the unpredictable Embarras River floodplain. Widely recognized for its aggressive project management and engineering ingenuity, Sangamo leveraged these strengths to secure this competitive contract and confidently commit to the rigid multi-year timeline.
Confronted with the challenging, wet soil conditions of the river basin, Sangamo strategically mobilized a powerful fleet of foundation equipment from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) to handle the deep foundation work. For the critical task of creating watertight cofferdams, crews are utilizing an ICE® 28 Vibratory Hammer paired with an ICE® 140 Sheeting Clamp, both driven by an ICE® 350 Power Pack. This setup delivers the precise dynamic force needed to drive heavy PZ and NZ interlocking steel sheet piles through the dense river silts, creating rigid walls to completely seal off the excavation zones. To push larger, heavy structural elements deep into the earth, the team deployed the massive ICE® 66 Vibratory Hammer alongside an ICE® 800 Power Pack and a 240 Clamp Unit. These vibratory packages are outfitted with specialized Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, which were selected for their extreme durability, high-pressure resilience, and flexibility under intense field vibrations. Once the vibratory hammers guide the sheet piles and heavy structural casings through the upper soil layers, an ICE® I-36 Diesel Pile Hammer is brought in to deliver the heavy impact force required to seat the foundations firmly into solid load-bearing strata.
This monumental effort has earned deep gratitude from local residents and daily commuters who rely on this vital corridor every single day. The surrounding communities extend their heartfelt thanks to the hardworking crews braving the elements and challenging river conditions to build a safer, stronger future for the region. At the same time, the entire team at International Construction Equipment, Inc. is thrilled to see their specialized ICE® fleet and innovative Hydrauli-Flex™ technology working hard on the ground, playing a foundational role in bringing this essential Midwestern infrastructure project to life.
