Building for Better Care
September 19, 2025
Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, is undergoing a transformative $280 million campus improvement plan aimed at expanding and modernizing its healthcare facilities. This ambitious initiative includes the construction of a new patient care tower and significant upgrades to existing infrastructure, all designed to enhance the quality and accessibility of care for the community. As part of this effort, critical site preparation is underway to safely remove underground tanks and lay the groundwork for future development.
Turner Construction is leading the project as the general contractor, with Keller North America serving as the specialty subcontractor for geo-technical and foundation work. Known for their technical expertise and problem, solving capabilities, Keller is managing the installation of a cofferdam system to facilitate the safe excavation of buried tanks. Their team encountered unexpected subsurface resistance while driving 35-foot sheet piles, reaching refusal at just 17 feet--prompting a shift to exploratory drilling and soil assessment. This adaptive approach ensures the project remains on track while maintaining safety and structural integrity.
To drive the sheet piles, Keller utilized the ICE® 16VM/18ZR variable moment vibratory hammer, a precision-engineered solution previously acquired from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). The 16VM/18ZR's variable moment technology minimizes vibration transmission to nearby hospital structures, which is an essential feature in a sensitive healthcare environment such as this. To further enhance its performance, the system utilizes Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, which deliver superior hydraulic flow and flexibility, guaranteeing consistent power and control even under challenging soil conditions.
ICE® is proud to support Keller and Turner Construction in this vital project, and we extend our sincere thanks to the entire team for their trust in our equipment. Their commitment to building a safer, stronger healthcare facility for the Hartford community is an inspiration. It's an honor to be part of a project that not only advances construction innovation but also supports the well-being of thousands of patients and families. Amazing work, to all involved!
