Bulkhead Repairs at Mantua Creek Lift Bridge

Along the industrially active Mantua Creek in West Deptford, NJ, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, a vital infrastructure project is underway to reinforce the shoreline near the Route 44 lift bridge. This area sees frequent barge and boat traffic, making durable water-edge protection essential. Agate Construction is leading the effort to repair and upgrade the bulkhead and fender system, which helps absorb the impact of vessels and prevent erosion. The project, part of a $3.75 million contract awarded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), is focused on long-term resilience and safety for both the bridge and surrounding waterway.

With over four decades of experience in heavy civil and marine construction, Agate Construction has built a reputation for tackling complex shoreline and bridge projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Their work on Mantua Creek reflects their specialized knowledge in marine infrastructure, particularly in areas with challenging access and high-water traffic. Agate has been active in similar composite bulkhead installations across New Jersey, making them a natural choice for this repair effort.

To complete this particular bulkhead and fender system, Agate Construction rented a suite of ICE® deep foundation equipment tailored to the job's unique demands. An ICE® Model 22 Vibratory Hammer is being used to drive composite piles for the bulkhead wall and fender system, no steel involved. For lighter composite sheeting, the team is using an ICE® Model 2 Vibratory Driver/Extractor which is specifically designed for more delicate materials. Additionally, an ICE® 55 Timber Clamp was paired with the Model 22 to remove old wooden piles. The setup also includes some ICE® 105 Caisson Clamps to secure the composite piles during installation. Another critical component in this setup is the Hydrauli-Flex™ hose, which ensures consistent hydraulic flow and pressure across all ICE® vibratory equipment, enabling smooth, uninterrupted operation even under the demanding conditions of marine construction. Despite the challenges of working with fragile composite materials, ICE® equipment continues to provide the precision and adaptability needed to vibrate these components to grade efficiently.

While the Mantua Creek bulkhead project progresses, International Construction Equipment commends Agate Construction for their skilled execution and commitment to protecting New Jersey's waterways. With ICE® tools supporting the effort, this fender system will help safeguard the lift bridge and surrounding infrastructure from the constant rhythm of industrial marine traffic, ensuring the creek remains navigable and secure for years to come.
