Keller Installs Ground Anchors for LNG Tanks

Wisconsin is infamous for its long, snowy, and freezing winters--a time when the demand for natural gas to heat homes is at its highest. Partially due to the economic recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. households can expect to pay around 54% more for natural gas this winter. Therefore, by storing it when demand is low in the summertime, energy companies can ensure adequate supply when demand is at its peak, putting money back in their customers' pockets. 

We Energies, a Wisconsin-based public utility, was authorized to build two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks for peak shaving facilities in southeastern Wisconsin near the towns Ixonia and LaGrange. This $185 million project will enhance the company's reliability and provide additional natural gas supply to heat homes and businesses on the chilliest days of the year. The tanks will each have the capacity to store 12 million gallons of LNG, making the region less dependent on gas from interstate pipelines. 

Keller Group was selected to install ground anchors for an LNG tank containment pit. ICE® supplied the Comacchio MC28 Drill Rig to drill rock sockets for the tie-back anchors that will prevent any slab upheaval. The contractor was impressed with the single-stroke ability of this robust drill and its 14-ton mast that allowed for a quick and efficient drilling process. 

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. International Construction Equipment, Inc commends Keller for helping to better meet southeastern Wisconsin's natural gas demand in the season when families are cooking Thanksgiving dinner on a gas range, then needing a nap on a warm couch afterwards!
