Expanding Port Liberty Bayonne

A notable $47.4 million expansion of Global Container Terminals (GCT) Bayonne has reached a significant milestone for the Port Liberty facility in Jersey City, NJ. Located just southwest of the Statue of Liberty, this project extends the existing shipping wharf at Berth 2 to create Berth 3; a 150,000+ square foot industrial marine terminal designed to handle international cargo more efficiently. With its sloped cast-in-place deck, embedded utilities, crane pits, bollards, fenders, and two continuous steel crane rails, Berth 3 is engineered to seamlessly integrate with Berth 2. The new pier will allow the installation of four additional gantry cranes, enabling the port to unload more ships in less time and dramatically increasing productivity. This expansion is part of a broader vision for Port Liberty Bayonne, which includes future repairs to Berth 1 and further eastward wharf development.

Trevcon Construction, a trusted name in marine and heavy civil construction, was selected to lead this ambitious project. Known for their expertise in waterfront infrastructure, Trevcon has a long-standing reputation for delivering complex projects across the New York Harbor region. Their ability to manage large-scale pile driving, precast installations, and marine logistics made them the ideal partner for GCT Bayonne LP. Trevcon's involvement in multiple Port Liberty projects, including the upcoming repair of Berth 1, underscores their deep connection to the area and their proven ability to execute projects that strengthen the region's shipping and trade capabilities.

For this project, an ICE® I-62v2 diesel hammer played a central role in the successful construction of Berth 3. As a key piece of equipment in Trevcon's ICE® fleet, the I‑62v2 was selected for its proven power and reliability in driving the 24″ and 30″ (In) square concrete piles that support the new wharf. The project's structural elements, including the capped sheet-pile wall, precast caps, and crane rail beams, demanded both precision and strength, and the ICE® I‑62v2 consistently delivered. With more than 40,000 tons of rip-rap stone placed beneath the structure, the hammer ensured each pile was driven securely and efficiently, contributing to the long-term durability of the terminal. This investment in ICE® equipment highlights Trevcon's commitment to using dependable tools that produce high‑quality results for their clients.

The completion of Berth 3 is more than just a construction achievement; it represents a boost to the local economy, international trade, and the community surrounding Port Liberty Bayonne. Residents and businesses alike will benefit from the increased shipping capacity and the jobs created by this expansion. International Construction Equipment extends its appreciation to Trevcon for their continued partnership and dedication to excellence. Their work not only strengthens the infrastructure of New York Harbor but also reinforces the region's role as a gateway for global commerce. With Trevcon's expertise and ICE® equipment at the forefront, Berth 3 stands as a testament to innovation, resilience, and progress. Fantastic work to all!
