Expanding Tampa’s Marine Infrastructure
October 20, 2025
As Tampa Bay continues to grow as a hub for construction materials and industrial shipping, Port Tampa Bay is investing in critical infrastructure to meet rising demand. One of the most impactful upgrades underway is the construction of the Berth 301 Wharf at Port Redwing, a project designed to expand bulk cargo capacity and improve operational efficiency. With a budget of $67 million and a targeted completion timeline of 12 months, this initiative reflects the port's strategic commitment to long-term growth and resilience.
Orion Marine, a division of Orion Group Holdings, was selected for this high-profile project based on its extensive experience in marine infrastructure and pile driving. Known for delivering complex waterfront projects across the Gulf Coast, Orion brings the technical know-how and equipment needed to execute large-scale wharf construction. Their multi-year relationship with Port Tampa Bay and proven track record in dredging, piling, and concrete marine structures made them the ideal choice for Berth 301.
At the heart of the project is the installation of large-diameter steel pipe piles, which will serve as the foundational support for the new concrete wharf. These piles are driven deep into the substrate to ensure structural integrity and load-bearing capacity, especially critical given the increased vessel traffic and cargo weights expected at the berth. Orion's pile driving operations are powered by an ICE® 595 Power Unit paired with robust Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses that deliver consistent, high-pressure hydraulic energy to the vibratory hammer system. Its smart controls and fuel-efficient design help maintain uptime while reducing operating costs, which are key advantages on a long-duration marine job. To further enhance safety and minimize vibration transmission to nearby structures, an ICE® Dampener is also in use. This component plays a vital role in protecting sensitive environments and maintaining compliance with coastal construction standards. Together, these tools support a high-performance pile driving system engineered for precision, durability, and environmental responsibility. The same ICE® vibratory hammer system used here was previously deployed by Orion on the Berth 218 project, further demonstrating its reliability in demanding marine environments.
Orion Marine's work at Port Redwing is a testament to the power of collaboration between public infrastructure and private expertise. Port Tampa Bay and the surrounding community are grateful for Orion's commitment to quality, safety, and timely delivery. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) extends its sincere thanks to Orion Marine for their continued trust in ICE® technology and for showcasing the strength of our equipment in such a critical infrastructure project. As the region continues to expand, partnerships like this one ensure Tampa remains a competitive and resilient gateway for commerce and construction.
