Fortifying Casey Key
September 20, 2026
The North Casey Key Road Shoreline Protection project in the southernmost part of Florida represents a critical lifeline for Sarasota County, serving as a primary hurricane evacuation route for a highly vulnerable, barrier-island coastal community. Decades of relentless Gulf of Mexico wave action, tidal scouring, and severe storm surges from consecutive hurricane seasons have caused extreme coastal erosion, threatening to completely isolate residents, compromise utility corridors, and wash away vital public infrastructure. To combat this severe environmental threat, a massive $46 million infrastructure overhaul is actively underway to completely excavate and rebuild the underlying road base while installing permanent, engineered shoreline defenses. Spanning two severely degraded segments of the key, this vital marine and heavy civil engineering initiative launched its phased progression to address active roadway voiding, with the ultimate goal of achieving full site restoration, enhanced structural longevity, and permanent storm resilience by late 2027.
Sarasota County selected Continental Heavy Civil Corporation to spearhead this complex undertaking, recognizing the contractor as a premier force in heavy civil and marine infrastructure. Known for managing high-stakes municipal and federal projects across challenging environments, the company brings a wealth of specialized expertise in deep foundations and coastal armoring. Their technical capability shines on this project as teams seamlessly coordinate construction staging, traffic control, and temporary access measures to ensure local residents maintain safe passage throughout the multi-year timeline. By deploying specialized assets like custom jack-up barges to create rigid platforms in volatile nearshore zones, Continental Heavy Civil proves why they are uniquely equipped to handle the intricate logistics of this coastal stabilization effort.
Central to the active marine operations is an ICE® 44 Vibratory Driver/Extractor, which crews deployed directly onto the water to drive the massive steel sheet-pile seawalls and temporary bulkheads. This heavy-duty system from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) was selected for its exceptional power-to-weight ratio and proven reliability in dense marine substrates, allowing teams to seamlessly transition between driving permanent structures and extracting temporary stabilizers. To ensure maximum operational efficiency and prevent environmental contamination in the delicate coastal ecosystem, the vibratory hammer is paired with high-performance Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, which deliver optimal hydraulic pressure while resisting the abrasive saltwater environment. This precise equipment configuration allows the marine crews to successfully anchor the shoreline defenses before transitioning to land-based sub-grade excavation and granite rip-rap placement.
The successful progression of these complex shoreline repairs brings immense peace of mind to the families and commuters who rely on North Casey Key Road for daily travel and emergency safety. Sarasota County residents owe a debt of gratitude to Continental Heavy Civil for minimizing disruptions to local traffic while fortifying the coastline against future natural disasters. International Construction Equipment also shares this pride, celebrating a successful partnership and extending sincere thanks to the contractor for trusting ICE® machinery to secure this vital piece of Florida infrastructure.
