An Historic Investment in West Virginia’s Future
October 6, 2025
The Nucor Steel mill in Apple Grove, West Virginia, represents a transformative moment in the state's industrial history. With a staggering $3.1 billion investment, the largest in West Virginia's history, the project is set to reshape the region's economic landscape. Spanning 1,700 acres between the Ohio River and WV Route 2, the facility will produce up to 3 million tons of sheet steel annually. It will feature advanced capabilities including 84-inch sheet products, a 76-inch tandem cold mill, and two galvanizing lines tailored for high-end automotive and construction-grade steel. This mill is not just a steel plant, it's a symbol of growth, innovation, and long-term opportunity for the community and the state.
Given the scale and complexity of the Nucor project, selecting the right contractor for foundational work was critical. The team chosen brought deep expertise in large-scale industrial construction and a proven track record of delivering precision and reliability under demanding conditions. Their understanding of the site's unique geotechnical challenges, especially those posed by its proximity to the Ohio River, made them the ideal choice to lead the pile driving operations that began in early 2024.
A project of this magnitude demands not only precision and power, but also trusted expertise, and Beaver Excavating delivered on all fronts. As one of the union contractors awarded the pile driving contract for the Nucor Steel mill, Beaver Excavating brought decades of experience in geotechnical construction and deep foundation work. Their selection was a strategic move, backed by a strong reputation for quality, safety, and a commitment to hiring local union labor.
Beaver's capabilities span a wide range of foundational services, including driven piles, drilled shafts, sheet pile installation, and ground improvement techniques. On the Apple Grove site, their team tackled challenging soil conditions with confidence, laying the groundwork for the mill's massive structural components. Their partnership with ICE® equipment ensured that the job was done efficiently and reliably, with the ICE® 44B vibratory hammer playing a central role in the success of the pile driving operations.
To support the immense structural loads of arc furnaces, rolling mills, and other heavy equipment, deep foundation work was a critical first step. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) answered the call with its powerful ICE® 44B vibratory hammer. Delivering 207 tons of driving force at 1,800 vibrations per minute, this high-frequency hammer proved to be the ideal solution for the job. It was deployed to drive sheet piles for retaining walls and cofferdams, install foundation piles, and assist with temporary shoring and excavation support, while its Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses ensured reliable hydraulic flow and durability throughout the demanding operation. Thanks to the 44's ability to perform efficiently in the dense riverbank soils while minimizing vibration transmission to nearby structures, this mighty hammer became an indispensable asset on site.
The Apple Grove community has expressed deep appreciation for the professionalism and dedication of all of the contractors and their crews. Their work is truly laying the foundation for a brighter future in the region. International Construction Equipment, Inc. proudly salutes Beaver Excavating and their team for their outstanding execution and commitment to excellence. We are honored to have played a role in this historic project and extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.
