ICE® 110C at Work on I‑70 KC

The Improve I‑70 KC Project marks a major milestone in the evolution of one of Missouri's oldest and most heavily traveled interstate corridors. Originally constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, this stretch of I‑70 has carried generations of commuters, freight, and cross‑country travelers through the heart of Kansas City. After decades of wear and increasing congestion, the corridor is now undergoing a $237 million modernization, spanning five miles between Paseo Boulevard and U.S. 40/31st Street. The project includes the replacement of 15 bridges, rehabilitation of seven more, and the reconstruction of historically troublesome curves like Benton and Jackson to improve safety and traffic flow. Beginning in spring 2025 and continuing through spring 2028, this overhaul represents one of the most significant infrastructure reinvestments in the region in more than half a century.

To deliver a project of this scale, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) selected the Clarkson/Rademacher Joint Venture, a partnership built on deep regional experience and specialized technical capability. Clarkson Construction Company, founded in Kansas City in 1880, has shaped much of the city's modern infrastructure; from highways and interchanges to major civic structures. Their long-standing reputation for quality and efficiency makes them a natural fit for a project that must balance tight timelines with complex engineering demands. Simultaneously, Rademacher brings decades of expertise in heavy civil and bridge foundation work, making the JV exceptionally well‑equipped to tackle the deep foundations, structural replacements, and geotechnical challenges that define the I‑70 corridor improvements.

At the heart of the JV's foundation work is an ICE® 110C Vibratory Driver/Extractor, a powerhouse selected for its ability to handle large‑diameter piles and perform reliably in Kansas City's notoriously tough subsurface conditions. For this portion of the project, the ICE® 110C is being used to drive 54‑inch steel pipe piles, which will later be filled with concrete and rebar to form the deep foundations supporting the new and rehabilitated bridges. Celebrated for its high eccentric moment and balanced suspended weight, these features allow the 110C to effectively penetrate dense clay layers, a common obstacle in the region. This powerful piece of equipment is also essential for installing sheet piling for cofferdams, creating dry, stable work zones for substructure construction below the waterline. Outfitted with Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, the system further benefits from improved hydraulic efficiency, reduced heat buildup, and enhanced durability which are critical advantages during long, continuous driving operations. Thanks to its versatility and reliability, the ICE® 110C is a key contributor to keeping this project on schedule and ensuring long‑term structural performance.

As the region prepares for a safer, smoother, and more efficient I‑70 corridor, both the community and International Construction Equipment extend sincere appreciation to the entire Clarkson/Rademacher JV team for their dedication to excellence. This essential work is creating the groundwork for a future defined by greater mobility, stronger connectivity, and sustained economic growth for decades to come. By investing now, MoDOT and Kansas City officials are enabling communities and businesses to thrive, opening doors to new opportunities, and ensuring long‑term prosperity across the region. ICE® is proud to support these efforts with equipment engineered for performance and longevity, and we look forward to seeing the lasting impact this project will have on the region's transportation network. Bravo, Clarkson/Rademacher JV!
