ICE® 22VM Creates Innovative Solutions
July 25, 2025
Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman, Inc. (BAC), a contractor known for their innovative construction approaches, has been hard at work on a slope stabilization project at the Providence Veteran's Administration (VA) Medical Center in Rhode Island. This project is a prime example of advanced engineering and cutting-edge equipment being leveraged to create safe and durable infrastructure in a sensitive environment.
A critical element of this project involves the use of a rented ICE® 22VM Variable Moment Vibratory Hammer paired with an ICE® 580TZ Power Unit from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). This combination allows for seamless sheet pile installation while minimizing noise and vibration, which is an essential consideration near hospitals and urban settings.
Recently, BAC crews successfully executed a challenging "turn in the sheet line," adjusting the alignment of the sheet piles to meet the site-specific design requirements. During this delicate project, they have installed three sets of double sheet piles: pairs of interlocking piles driven into the ground; providing enhanced stability and structural integrity for the retaining structure.
The ICE® 22VM proved invaluable for this task, as their combined ability to augment the continuous press drill piles into the ground through tough soil layers and "walk" along the sheet line made the process both vibration free and precise. Additionally, the ICE® 22VM's high-performance Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses ensure optimal power transmission and reliable operation throughout the sheet piling operation. Engineered for durability under demanding conditions, these hoses facilitate steady performance, enhancing both the efficiency and accuracy of the equipment on-site.
Slope stabilization is a critical factor in ensuring the safety and stability of the Providence VA Medical Center's infrastructure. By preventing soil erosion and landslides, these measures protect nearby buildings, roads, utilities, and natural habitats. This is especially vital for facilities like Providence VA, which must remain operational at all times to meet critical healthcare needs.
For this project, the smooth installation of 45' (ft) sheet piles was critical to ensuring slope stability and preventing soil movement. These interlocking steel sheets form a robust barrier, and the BAC crew wisely employed a specialized, low-impact technique at the site to minimize disturbance. The process began with three sheets being partially pressed into the ground using a hydraulic press, guided by a mandrel to reduce resistance and ensure precise placement. Once the sheets were securely embedded, their interlocks were welded to prevent shifting, and the mandrel was carefully removed. This low vibration method is particularly well-suited for sensitive environments like Providence VA, offering deep embedment in dense soils without compromising surrounding structures or ecosystems.
The installation process followed a carefully sequenced approach to ensure both structural integrity and environmental control. To begin, a 10-foot-wide ledge was carved into the existing hillside, creating a stable working platform for the crew. Prior to installation, a specialized sealant was applied to the sheet pile interlocks; this compound expands as it cures, forming a watertight barrier that prevents leakage. With the site cleared and leveled for accuracy, sheet piles were then vertically pressed into the ground using the ICE® 22VM and once in place, the wall was anchored with tiebacks and reinforced to enhance long-term stability. Finally, drainage systems were integrated to manage water flow and relieve hydrostatic pressure, completing a robust and resilient installation.
This approach not only safeguards the site's infrastructure but also minimizes disruptions to the surrounding community and environment.
Exemplifying how modern construction techniques and advanced equipment can achieve ambitious goals without compromising safety or the environment; this collaboration between Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman, Inc., International Construction Equipment, Inc. highlights the importance of precision, innovation, and expertise in delivering high-quality results.
ICE® is elated to have contributed to this success with its reliable, cutting-edge equipment and steadfast commitment to the industry. Together, BAC's ingenuity and ICE®'s innovative tools have ensured the project's success, setting a benchmark for collaboration and excellence in infrastructure development. Amazing work to all involved!
