ICE® Elevates Air Travel
October 30, 2025
Salt Lake City International Airport is entering the final phase of its historic $5.13 billion Terminal Redevelopment Program (TRP), a multi-year effort to modernize one of the busiest hubs in the Mountain West. With construction now in Phase 4, crews are building out 16 new gates on Concourse B-east; five of which are set to open in Fall 2025, and the remaining 11 by October 2026. This final stretch includes extensive airfield paving, jet bridge installations, and interior finishes, all designed to support up to 34 million passengers annually. The project has been funded entirely through airport revenues, including a $700 million bond issuance approved in June 2025, ensuring no impact on local property taxes.
Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction (RLW), a division of Wadsworth Construction, was selected to lead this critical phase of development. Known for their deep foundation expertise, logistical precision and innovative problem-solving, RLW has managed the delivery and installation of over 1,071 steel pipe piles and 1,517 H-piles across the site. Their reputation for delivering complex infrastructure projects under challenging conditions, such as working year-round in extreme weather, made them the ideal partner for this high-stakes endeavor. RLW's engineering team demonstrated exceptional adaptability by replacing a complex caisson design for a pedestrian bridge with driven steel piles. This innovative shift not only improved safety and reduced costs but also cut construction time in half, highlighting RLW's commitment to efficiency and forward-thinking solutions.
To meet the demands of the deep foundation work, RLW turned to International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for heavy-duty pile driving solutions. The team rented three ICE® I-46v2 Diesel Impact Pile Hammers, known for their high energy output and reliability in tough soil conditions. These hammers were used to drive 60'x16" steel pipe piles and H-piles, forming the backbone of the new concourse and tunnel structures. The choice of diesel hammers was strategic, ensuring consistent performance and minimal vibration near active airport terminals; a critical consideration for maintaining operations during construction. To boost efficiency, RLW also deployed multiple ICE® Model 44B Vibratory Pile Drivers outfitted with Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses, achieving a remarkable pace of 60 to 80 piles per day. These specialized hoses offer enhanced flexibility and durability, making them ideal for the rigors of vibratory pile driving. By utilizing this diverse range of equipment on-site, the RLW experts have showcased the adaptability and performance of ICE® solutions in meeting the evolving demands of complex construction projects.
As Salt Lake City prepares to unveil its newest gates and amenities, the community stands to benefit from a more efficient, modern, and resilient airport. International Construction Equipment extends its sincere gratitude to the entire Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction team for their trust and partnership. Together, we're not just building infrastructure; we're building the future of air travel in the Mountain West.
