Making Waves at Berth 268

Berth 268 at the Port of Tampa is more than just a docking point; it's a gateway to Florida's economic engine. As one of the busiest ports in the Gulf, Tampa plays a vital role in moving everything from petroleum to produce, and Berth 268's aging infrastructure was due for a serious upgrade. With a multi-million-dollar investment and a tight timeline to minimize disruption to port operations, the project aimed to modernize the wharf with a combi-wall system that would support heavier loads and extend the berth's service life for decades to come. The transformation of this critical marine asset reflects Tampa's commitment to staying competitive in global trade while protecting its waterfront heritage.

Orion Marine Group was the natural choice for this high-stakes marine construction effort. With decades of experience in heavy civil and marine infrastructure, Orion has built a reputation for precision, safety, and innovation. Their deep roots in Gulf Coast operations and proven track record with similar port upgrades made them uniquely qualified to tackle the challenges of Berth 268. From tidal timing to pile extraction logistics, Orion's team brought the expertise and adaptability needed to keep the project on schedule and within scope.

To handle the demanding pile extraction and installation, Orion deployed an ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammer and another vibratory hammer that they owned to work in tandem; powerhouse tools known for their reliability and performance in marine environments. The ICE® 44, equipped with Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses for enhanced durability and flexibility, was instrumental in driving the I-beams (king piles) and sheet piles that form the backbone of the new combi-wall. Whether loosening stubborn legacy piles or setting new steel deep into the seabed, the ICE® 44 easily delivered the consistent power and control needed to get the job done. While this piece of equipment was rented for the job, its selection was no coincidence; Orion knew they needed gear that could handle the rigors of waterfront construction without compromise.

As the final piles settle into place and Berth 268 prepares to welcome its next generation of cargo vessels, the Port of Tampa and its stakeholders extend sincere thanks to Orion Marine for their craftsmanship and commitment. International Construction Equipment also salutes Orion for their continued trust in ICE® tools to get the job done right. With every hammer strike, this project echoes a shared vision: building stronger ports, safer shores, and a more resilient future for maritime commerce.
