NEW ICE® 70 is Revitalizing Brooklyn’s Working Waterfront

Playing a vital role in New York City's maritime economy, the Brooklyn Marine Terminal is revitalizing its operations to reaffirm its position as a cornerstone and key hub for cargo movement, vessel docking, and waterfront operations. As part of ongoing improvements to ensure safe vessel clearance and long‑term structural stability, crews returned this season to advance previously installed sheet piles with an additional 5' to 8' (Ft) to ensure their ability to clear the docking vessels. With piles sitting nearly 30' (ft) below the water's surface and positioned tight against the existing dock, the work demanded both accuracy and adaptability. Although this job was relatively short in duration, it is an important continuation of the multi‑year effort to strengthen the terminal infrastructure; an effort that saw an ICE® 44 on site in 2024

Weeks Marine, one of the most respected names in the U.S. marine and heavy civil construction industry, was selected to execute this phase of the project. With more than a century of experience and a long history of complex waterfront work, Weeks brings unmatched expertise in navigating tidal conditions, vessel traffic, and tight working clearances. Their team's ability to fabricate a custom 40' (ft) clamp extension in‑house and designed specifically to meet the geometry and constraints of the Brooklyn dock demonstrates the ingenuity and problem‑solving that have made Weeks Marine a go‑to contractor for challenging marine environments. Their team is no stranger to the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, having supported earlier stages of the project and demonstrating a strong understanding of the site's tidal patterns, vessel traffic, and tight working clearances; which speaks to their resourcefulness and commitment to delivering solutions tailored to the environment.

This project marked the first field deployment of the newly unveiled ICE® Model 70 Vibratory Hammer, bringing 7,000 in‑lbs of eccentric moment, 1,600 vpm, and 265 tons of driving force to the job. Paired with a 50' (ft) clamp extension, created with a standard 10' (ft) ICE® section and a contractor‑built 40' (ft) addition, the setup allowed crews to reach deep sheets while keeping the 16,400‑lb hammer safely above the waterline. An ICE® 240 clamp at the end of the assembly kept the hammer close enough to the dock face for confident control and clean engagement. Further support came from the durable Hydrauli‑Flex™ hoses, which maintained steady hydraulic flow and dependable performance throughout the operation. Despite waves, passing boats, and persistent wind making alignment a challenge, the Model 70's 1.28‑inch amplitude and robust design pushed the already submerged sheets with impressive ease. As a matter of fact, the Weeks crew noted how smooth and efficient the hammer felt throughout the operation, a strong endorsement for its first outing in the field.

With each improvement to the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, the surrounding community benefits from safer docking operations, more resilient infrastructure, and a stronger working waterfront. International Construction Equipment extends sincere appreciation to the entire Weeks Marine crew for trusting ICE® equipment once again and for providing valuable feedback on the Model 70's debut performance. Their skill and adaptability continue to push marine construction forward, and ICE® is proud to support Weeks Marine as they continue to help keep New York Harbor moving.
