Nucor "Steels” the Traffic Blues

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is launching a massive structural evolution in Northern Utah County with the construction of the 2100 North Freeway connection project. This multi-million-dollar design-build endeavor addresses severe traffic bottlenecks by creating a brand-new, direct freeway-to-freeway flow connecting Interstate 15 with the Mountain View Corridor. Commuters traveling this vital east-west commercial corridor will save an estimated twelve minutes in each direction during peak hours, significantly relieving neighboring secondary roads like Redwood Road. Ground has broken on this extensive transportation lifeline, which will take until late 2028 to complete, and includes the simultaneous development of 14 new mainline bridges and 2 major pedestrian overpasses to reshape the local community infrastructure safely.

The joint venture team executing this high-profile infrastructure project features Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction as a core contracting partner. Founded over fifty years ago on a legacy of fearlessness and rigorous work ethic, the heavy civil contractor has grown into one of the most respected bridgebuilders in the Western United States. They are the premier choice for this technically complex, high-traffic freeway expansion due to their expertise in fast-track bridge replacements and their extensive inventory of specialized machinery. By prioritizing continuous structural testing and retaining a workforce highly skilled in large-scale deep foundations, the contractor remains uniquely equipped to manage challenging regional soil profiles and the stringent delivery timelines set by the state.

To tackle the extensive deep-foundation and structural earth-retention phases, the contractor is mobilizing its rugged fleet of company-owned International Construction Equipment (ICE®) pile-driving hammers right out of the gate. The specialized crew is deploying high-torque ICE® vibratory drivers to install a wall of interlocking steel sheet piles sourced from Nucor Skyline for immediate, heavy-duty shoring. These vibratory systems utilize proprietary Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses to efficiently transfer hydraulic fluid and maximize torque under demanding physical stress. For the heavy structural bridge foundations, the crew is switching to robust ICE® diesel impact hammers to firmly advance the load-bearing Nucor structural steel piles down into the underlying soil strata. Working with Nucor products brings a legendary level of American-made durability to the job site, as Nucor stands as the largest steel producer in North America and is celebrated globally for its sustainable recycling infrastructure and high-strength structural manufacturing.

Local families and daily highway commuters are deeply grateful to Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction for steering this vital regional connection smoothly past its early structural milestones. This dedicated civil workforce is actively paving the way toward shorter travel times, cleaner air, and much safer morning commutes throughout the Salt Lake Valley. ICE® extends its warmest appreciation to the entire project crew for their continued trust in putting these high-performance foundation machines to work. Seeing these powerful hammers systematically driving down Nucor structural steel elements across 14 separate bridge alignments highlights the exact kind of high-impact infrastructure partnership that keeps regional communities moving forward securely.
