Prepping the Gateway to the Cape
September 1, 2026As the premier gateway to Cape Cod, the iconic Sagamore Bridge has connected millions of travelers and locals to the historic peninsula since its completion in 1935. Today, this crucial transportation artery faces the realities of modern traffic volume, prompting a massive infrastructure evolution overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). This transformative multi-year project entails building two massive bridges featuring integrated bicycle lanes and upgraded interchanges on either side of the Cape Cod Canal. To dramatically speed up construction, teams will employ accelerated bridge techniques, including prefabricating a massive bridge arch offsite and floating it directly down the canal. The highly anticipated main construction for the first span is scheduled to begin in 2027 with a completion goal of 2033, while both final spans are expected to be fully open to the public by 2037.
To eliminate engineering risks before this historic construction begins, a critical foundation load testing program officially commenced on May 1, 2026. The state confidently selected the A.A. Will Corporation to lead this essential risk management and site evaluation project. Known throughout the region for handling complex heavy civil assignments, this veteran contractor possesses the specialized knowledge and technical rigor demanded by the challenging geological conditions surrounding the canal. By leveraging their extensive fleet and highly skilled workforce, they are successfully managing the initial phase across four strategic testing locations, starting at the site adjacent to the former Christmas Tree Shops in Bourne. Their status as a trusted regional partner ensures that the heavy work runs smoothly, stays safely confined behind fences to protect the public, and completely avoids traffic disruptions during the busy summer travel season.
To conquer the rigorous testing schedule, the foundation crew has deployed high-performance pile driving equipment from International Construction Equipment to the active job sites. The contractor chose a powerful fleet including an ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammer alongside robust ICE® I-36v2 and I-46v2 Diesel Impact Hammers to handle the intense workload. This specialized machinery will be driving 24" (in) pipes and 14" (in) H-beams anywhere from 75' to 90' (ft) deep into the ground. When configuring the hydraulic setup for the vibratory equipment, the team utilized specialized Hydrauli-Flex™ hoses to ensure smooth, high-pressure fluid delivery, and built to easily withstand even the most the rigorous testing. This strategic combination of deep driving and heavy-duty testing frames allows the team to conduct precise drilled shaft evaluations and structural pressure tests, gathering the vital engineering data required to support the massive future bridge arches.
The residents of Bourne and the millions of annual visitors who love the Cape region owe a massive thank you to the hardworking crews of the A.A. Will Corporation for keeping this vital corridor moving forward with minimal disruption. International Construction Equipment is honored to provide the heavy-duty foundation tools that help this premier contractor safely anchor the next century of Massachusetts transportation, and the entire team eagerly looks forward to their continued partnership as this monumental infrastructure project progresses through its future phases.
