RJG Construction Anchors Another Milestone in Newfoundland
August 18, 2025
Nestled on the rugged northwest coast of Newfoundland, the small community of Lark Harbour is preparing for a major transformation. As part of Canada's $101 million investment in small craft harbors and search and rescue infrastructure, Lark Harbour will soon be home to a new wharf and dock facility, an essential upgrade that will support Coast Guard operations and enhance regional maritime safety.
At the helm of this ambitious project is RJG Construction, a family-owned company based in the historic port town of St. John's, Newfoundland. Known as the easternmost city in North America and a strategic WWII port, St. John's is now home to one of the most respected marine piling contractors in the region. RJG Construction Limited, founded by Bob Giovannini in 1991 and now transitioning leadership to his son Nick, has built a reputation for reliability, precision, and deep-rooted expertise in marine infrastructure.
RJG has been a loyal customer of International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for over a decade, owning a robust fleet of ICE® equipment that includes the ICE® HS-50 Rotary Head Drill, ICE® I-19v2 Diesel Impact Hammer, ICE® 22 and ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammers paired with ICE® 350 and 595 Power Units , as well as an impressive array of ICE® Dampeners. Preferring to invest in the tools that keep their projects on track and under control, the experts at RJG are currently considering adding an even larger ICE® hammer to their arsenal. To ensure optimal performance and durability in the harsh marine environment, all ICE® vibratory and hydraulic hammers and drills are equipped with Hydrauli-Flex™ ultra-durable hoses. These hoses are engineered to withstand extreme pressures and temperatures, providing the reliability needed for continuous operation in remote and demanding conditions.
The Lark Harbour project, valued at approximately $13 million CAD, began in February 2025 with pile driving operations. The goal is to complete the wharf and decking by October 2026, though RJG is pushing to finish by August; an ambitious target given the site's remote location, nearly 10 hours from their St. John's base. In an effort to solidify this forward movement, RJG crews have been stationed on-site for extended periods, braving Newfoundland's harsh winters to maintain momentum year-round.
Initially, the plan called for drilling 24" (in) hollow steel pipes to bedrock using an ICE® HS-50 Rotary Head powered by an ICE® 350 Power Unit and supported by four Atlas Copco compressors for down-the-hole hammering. However, the subsurface conditions proved less resistant than anticipated, prompting a shift in strategy.
To meet this challenge, RJG's engineers revised the plan to drive closed-end 24" (in) diameter steel pipes, each 40 meters long, into the subsoil until practical refusal. RJG's experienced crew adapted quickly, deploying their ICE® 44 vibratory hammer to set the piles in place, followed by the ICE® I-19 impact hammer to drive them to the required depth.
With eight marine piling projects currently underway and more in the pipeline, RJG Construction continues to demonstrate why they are the go-to contractor for Newfoundland and Labrador's most challenging marine infrastructure needs. Their work at Lark Harbour is not just another job, it's a testament to their legacy, their adaptability, and their commitment to building the future of Canada's coastal communities.
At ICE®, we are proud to support RJG Construction with the deep foundation equipment they rely on to deliver critical infrastructure across Newfoundland and Labrador.
