Russell Marine and ICE® Push Boundaries at Wando Welch Terminal
May 31, 2025
The Wando Welch Terminal project in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, was a groundbreaking effort aimed at strengthening port infrastructure while minimizing operational disruptions. Led by Colston Lloyd of Russell Marine, this ambitious construction project involved installing 861 NZ 38 and NZ 28 sheet piles to create a sheet pile toe wall--a critical reinforcement for one of the busiest ports on the East Coast.
With a $15.2 million budget and a tight timeline, success depended on precise execution and strong industry partnerships. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) and The Hose Company (THC) played a vital role in ensuring smooth operations, with ICE® providing vibratory hammer solutions--including the ICE® 66B with a 60-foot extension--and THC ensuring rapid hose replacements when needed. According to Lloyd, "Any moments that hoses were needed, ICE® and The Hose Co made it happen, and was paramount to our success." The Hose Company's commitment to quality ensures that their hoses provide the necessary support for ICE® equipment to perform at its best, even in challenging environments.
During this project, the major challenge was working within a small footprint, occupying less than half a berth in a three-berth operational terminal while still allowing port activities to proceed. This strategic approach helped save billions in the South Carolina economy while reinforcing vital infrastructure. The construction required precise sheet pile installation 48 feet underwater in heavy currents, demanding advanced equipment and well-coordinated efforts.
One of the defining factors of the project's success was ICE®'s custom-designed pile driving template, developed in collaboration with Russell Marine. This innovation eliminated the need for falsework piles and ensured the safe passage of ship-to-shore cranes, integrating essential safety features like anchor points, handrails, and ladders.
With the Russell Marine team operating locally from their new Charleston office, the project was completed ahead of schedule, wrapping up in January 2025--2-3 months early. ICE®'s ability to adapt to changing demands--such as adjusting from an ICE® 110 to an ICE® 66B when required--exemplifies the value of having job-specific equipment, a large fleet of hammers, and a responsive service department ready to address challenges in real-time.
The Wando Welch Terminal project is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships, innovation, and expert engineering. With Russell Marine's leadership, ICE® and The Hose Company's indispensable support, and a shared commitment to efficiency, the project was a resounding success. Not only did it reinforce essential port infrastructure, but it also set a new standard for marine construction--proving that with the right expertise and equipment, even the most demanding projects can be completed ahead of schedule and with lasting impact. Brilliant work to the entire Russell Marine Team! International Construction Equipment is proud to have been a part of this monumental project!
