O&G/Tutor Perini’s Connecticut River Bridge Project

The Connecticut River Bridge Replacement Project is a monumental $1.3 billion infrastructure upgrade, designed to enhance rail connectivity along the Northeast Corridor (NEC). As part of the O&G/Tutor Perini Joint Venture, crews are employing cutting-edge ICE® pile driving equipment to construct a new trestle work platform and support future railroad infrastructure.

At the heart of this operation, O&G crews are utilizing two ICE® IP-7 Hydraulic Impact Hammers, equipped with bolt-on pile guides in 32" (in) tapertop leaders, alongside two ICE® 50Bs to drive 24" (in) spliced pipe piles. These piles, stretching approximately 150' (ft) in length, are first driven as far as possible using the ICE® 50Bs, after which the IP-7 Hammers take over to drive them further to capacity--approximately 700 kips--providing a robust foundation for the trestle work platform.

Simultaneously, at the end of the Connecticut River, O&G crews are strategically shaking in 24" (in) pipe piles using an ICE® 50B, followed by proofing them with the ICE® IP-7, ensuring structural integrity and maximizing load-bearing capacity.

Looking ahead, 26" (in) and 30" (in) pipe piles will also be driven to further support railroad infrastructure, reinforcing the bridge's longevity and durability.

A crucial component of this pile driving operation is the Hydrauli-Flex hose system, which plays an essential role in seamless hydraulic energy transfer across ICE® equipment. These hoses are specifically designed to withstand high pressures, ensuring consistent driving force and optimal performance in demanding conditions. Their durability and flexibility not only minimize downtime but also enhance precision, allowing crews to efficiently navigate challenging soil and water conditions.

With deep foundation work well underway, the Connecticut River Bridge Replacement Project is on track to improve rail reliability, reduce travel delays, and support future rail expansion. Thanks to the expertise of O&G/Tutor Perini and the powerful ICE® pile driving equipment, this once-in-a-century bridge transformation is steadily progressing toward completion.

Brilliant work to the entire O&G/Tutor Perini team! International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is honored to be part of this historic project, providing high-performance equipment and expert support to help build the future of rail connectivity.
