Veracruz, Mexico is home to a vital engine for regional commerce and maritime logistics coordination: the New Port of Veracruz. While the port's infrastructure has provided essential support for international trade for years, structural wear eventually demanded a targeted modernization effort in the North Bay. The existing infrastructure required a complete overhaul to meet modern maritime resilience standards and safely support the heavy vessels navigating the harbor. Stepping up to answer the call, project owner Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional de Veracruz (ASIPONA de Veracruz) awarded a major marine reconstruction contract. Operations officially launched to reconstruct a critical 150-meter pier, marking a major turning point as teams moved in for full extraction and advanced pile-driving operations to build a stronger, more resilient pier specifically designed to service tugboats and mooring vessels.
SGC Cimentaciones y Puertos took charge of the job as the elite marine contractor selected by ASIPONA de Veracruz. Chosen for their expertise in complex deep marine construction and heavy civil foundations, the team possessed the heavy-duty muscle and specialized assets needed to self-perform the entire scope of work. Field crews assumed total responsibility for clearing out failing legacy materials, driving advanced large-diameter steel pipe piles, and constructing a robust new superstructure. Because restoring vital tugboat operations quickly was a top priority, the contractor expertly navigated tight spatial constraints within the active North Bay while executing flawless alignment to verify structural load requirements.
Clearing the way for the new footprint required an extensive marine extraction phase to remove legacy materials that were in poor condition. Crews successfully extracted 122 reinforced concrete piles, measuring 24" (in) × 24" (in) in cross-section and stretching 120' (ft) in length, using the high-performance capabilities of an ICE® 50B Vibratory Driver paired with an ICE® 85C concrete clamp. This same ICE® 50B vibratory asset was additionally deployed to extract 92 structural steel beams measuring 16" (in) × 16" (in) and 120' (ft) in length. Overcoming the severe suction forces of the dense seabed soils during extraction required a precise balance of force and control, which smoothly paved the way for the advanced pile-driving phase of the new pier structure.
Installing the heavy-capacity foundations for the new pier demanded an elite deep foundation machinery arsenal from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). Specifically chosen to meet the strict structural specifications, the contractor drove a total of 72 massive steel pipe piles, each measuring 60" (in) in diameter, 122' (ft) in length, and featuring a ½" (in) wall thickness. For initial positioning and rapid penetration through stubborn, saturated coastal sands, the team deployed the high-performance ICE® 66C Vibratory Hammer to fluidly seat the large-diameter pipes. To achieve ultimate deep embedment and meet the massive load-bearing requirements necessary to withstand future maritime operations, the crew then transitioned to ICE®'s flagship impact technology, unleashing the high-performance ICE® I-46v2 Diesel Impact Hammer to drive the heavy steel columns safely to their target depth.
Engineers topped the newly driven steel foundations with a robust, multi-layered pier superstructure designed for decades of heavy usage. Crews integrated cast-in-place pile caps and high-strength prestressed precast slabs directly over the pipe columns. A finished 25 cm compression slab was then cast across the deck to establish a uniform, heavy-duty surface for rigorous tugboat and mooring vessel support. This newly finished asset stands ready to handle intense daily harbor traffic, ensuring the port remains structurally superior while expanding regional logistical capabilities.
Finalizing this vital harbor asset successfully marks a major milestone for the region's maritime logistics. Smooth coordination between the engineering teams and field crews allowed the project to finish safely, delivering a rugged, long-lasting structure that will serve the port's fleet for decades.
