Connecticut Commuters Read All About It

Strategically placing a billboard can be one of the more effective ways to gain customers and popularity for a company that is trying to grow. Areas where there are high traffic volumes tend to be the common ground where you would find a billboard placed. Recently, a new billboard was installed in Meriden, CT, where Colony Street intersects with I-691. Colony Street runs underneath the interstate giving the billboard a more eye level view for commuters on I-691. Meridian has a population of roughly 61,000 people and is the halfway point between New Haven and Hartford, CT. The newly installed billboard will be seen by thousands of drivers daily due its proximity to I-691 and the I-91 interchange, which is the main thoroughfare for commuting to New York City.

Ultra - Lum Services, LLC has overseen the installation of the billboard and has been servicing the Outdoor Billboard Industry since 1998 with service areas in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. For this particular project, they opted to once again partner with International Construction Equipment, Inc, (ICE®). The equipment being used to drive the foundation for this billboard was an ICE® 44B Vibratory Hammer paired with an ICE® 580T Power Unit, chosen for its 165-ton driving force. Once the 48" (in) by 52' (ft) cylindrical caisson foundation was installed, the billboard then rests on top, allowing for many years of advertising space.

According to the Arbitron National In-Car study, 71% of people consciously look at billboards while driving and 58% of viewers physically went to the event or business after seeing the billboard advertisement. With stats like these, billboards are not going anywhere soon. This will have been Ultra - Lum Services, LLC and International Construction Equipment, Inc ICE® 38th billboard installation together! Bravo, Ultra- Lum Ultra - Lum Services, LLC! ICE® is proud to have provided the equipment for another successful billboard fitting. We look forward to our continued partnership and applaud you on your success.

Repairing the Historic Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the nation's most visited and scenic national parks. The park runs for 469 miles through 29 counties in Virginia and North Carolina providing memorable views of the Appalachian Mountains. There are also numerous parking areas at trailheads for the various hiking trails that intersect the parkway, and several campgrounds located along the parkway allow for overnight stays. Certain sections of the park are closed in the winter due to inclement weather making tunnels and bridges impassable and therefore closed from late fall through early spring. In result to this, road maintenance is highly needed when warmer temperatures occur.

Recently, general contractor, Kovolic Construction Company, who was awarded this job, has chosen GeoStabilization International (GSI) as the subcontractor to replace three bridges along the parkway in North Carolina. The experts at GSI specialize in emergency landslide repairs, rockfall mitigation, and foundations using design/build and design/build/warranty contracting; making it was no surprise that they wisely chose International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) to supply them with the equipment needed to complete this bridge construction. They have been using a Comacchio MC 4D drill to install 7-inch micro piles in a cofferdam as well as a Comacchio MC-15P to create a dry and safe working environment for bridge construction to occur.

Once the bridges are repaired, they will be accessible to the public, allowing for exploration and access to the breathtaking views that the Appalachian Mountains have to offer. This National Park is a must visit for anyone who loves the outdoors or simply just wants to enjoy a scenic drive. The three new bridges will provide a safer and more pleasurable experience for its visitors. Congratulations GeoStabilization International! International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is excited to have been a part of the historic Blue Ridge Parkway rehabilitation that is bound to serve tourists and locals for many years to come.

New Jersey's Route 78 Gets A New Look

Route 78 in Bedminister, NJ is receiving some new updates to help alleviate the increased volume of traffic that it has received over the last few years.  Route 78 is an east-west highway that runs from Harrisburg, PA all the way through the whole state of New Jersey ending at the Holland Tunnel.  I-78 accommodates over four million trucks annually, representing 24% of all truck traffic in the nation. It also is a major connection point to the New York metropolitan area's three major international airports, Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport.

As part of the current infrastructure programs in the area, Interstate 78 will receive new wider and safer modernized bridges along the highway. Konkus Corp., a New Jersey-based construction firm with a solid level of expertise in the bridge and highway construction markets, has been overseeing the highway renovation. To assure that they were getting the right equipment for the job, the experts at Konkus reached out to their local International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) Sales Team. After a brief conversation, it was determined that for this portion of the project Konkus would utilize an ICE® 22D Vibratory Hammer Driver/Extractor to drive and pull some 30 & 40' (ft) steel sheets that will serve as the new foundation for several new bridges along I-78. The bridges that were previously serving these areas numerous commuters were outdated and needed to be widened to minimize the myriad of issues caused by rapid growth. Once completed, these new structures will both improve safety and commuters' traffic time.

Many people that travel into New York City for work depend on Interstate 78 to get to and from their jobs. Having a widened highway with new bridges decreases the number of accidents, traffic, and frustration that drivers would have to experience on an outdated route. Thanks to the hard work of the Konkus Corp. crew, the rehabilitation of this heavily traversed corridor will now give all New Jerseyans one less thing to worry about. Well-done, Konkus Corp! ICE® is happy to continue to provide the deep foundation equipment that our contractors can count on. Reach out to our Sales & Service Team to find out how we can assist you with your needs!

SPS-Walsh JV Helps Connect Massachusetts

The I-90/ I-95 interchange in Massachusetts is currently being remodeled for a completion date goal of early 2027. This new interchange will provide new bridges, wider exit ramps, and a safer environment for all people that use it. There are eight bridges that are part of this busy intersection and of the eight, five will be replaced, including the one that crosses the Charles River. The Charles River stretches 80 miles throughout Massachusetts and has been a helping factor with construction. Barges can float large cranes down the river to the jobsite which allows crews to have a more direct angle of what task needs to be completed.

SPS-Walsh JV construction has been working on trestle construction along the Charles River during the interchange remodeling. Recently, crews have been installing sheet pile bulkhead along with pipe piles in preparation to advance a 300-ton crane further down the Charles River. SPS-Walsh JV has selected to utilize the powerful equipment they have come to depend on from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) to complete this job. An ICE® 28 Vibratory Hammer and ICE® 44 Vibratory Hammer are being used to insert the 120'(ft) pipe piles and backfilling the bulkhead for the crane to be advanced.

The interchange connecting the highways is used by nearly half of the freight trucks entering eastern Massachusetts. It serves as a major junction for commuter traffic, with approximately 75,000 vehicles using the interchange every day. The new interchange will reduce traffic, truck turnovers, and improve the mainline flow of commuters for I-90 and I-95. SPS- Walsh JV have done a remarkable job with the sheet pile and pipe pile installation. This will allow the 300-ton crane to swiftly navigate the Charles River and keep their crews safe while they progress on target. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) has been thrilled to see the fabulous work on this new interchange and applauds the SPS- Walsh JV crews for their continued success!

ICE Model 28 Shines on Star Island

ICE Model 28 Shines on Star Island

Star Island is a neighborhood in the city of Miami Beach on a man-made island in Biscayne Bay, Florida.  The name "Star Island" is thought to have originated from the fact that many of the homes on the island were once owned by famous celebrities and high-profile individuals, giving the island a "star-studded" reputation. Famous celebrities who have lived on the island are Shaquille O'Neil, LeBron James, and Jennifer Lopez. The island was constructed in 1922 by the Army Corps of Engineers by dredging sand to create the man-made island structure. The land was initially owned by developer Carl Fisher, who purchased several land parcels of what would become the city of Miami Beach. The best way to access the island is by using the MacArthur Causeway and it is just 10 minutes from South Beach and Downtown Miami. The Island consists of 45 private waterfront lots, with an average lot size of 40,000 square feet (ft²) offering 100' (Ft) of waterfront by 400' (Ft) of depth.

With the Island being close to the Atlantic Ocean along with the heavy boat traffic, the homes on Star Island need to be protected from waves constantly hitting the shore. Three properties on the island were purchased recently and are having a new seawall installed. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) has had equipment working on the job and the project contractor will be using an ICE® Model 28 Vibratory Hammer to drive steel sheet pile for the sea wall along the three properties. This new seawall will prevent erosion, flooding, and keep these luxury lots safe during tropical storms and inclement weather.

Few people get access to Star Island besides its residents which made this a special project. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is thrilled to have been a part of this new seawall project. The new homeowners can now feel safer knowing that the deep foundations of these critical barriers are secured, allowing them to relax and enjoy the Florida sun!

I-495/ I-90 Improvements Project- Part 2

The Interstate 495 (I-495) at Interstate 90 (I-90) interchange in Massachusetts is one of the state's busiest roadway junctions. Currently, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MASSDOT) is in a five-year project to revamp the area including Mass Pike and Interstate 495 interchanges. First responders and local business advocates are excited for the potential benefits, as this $400 million project is the largest in the state and will replace all the ramps on the interchange, reducing crashes, travel time and traffic. This project also brings some challenges. The roadways are in an extremely sensitive environment, including an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and rare species habitat. This means that while crews are improving the safety of the interchange, they also must be cautious not to negatively affect the resources surrounding it.

J.F. White, a multi-disciplined contractor, with strengths in heavy/civil, design/build, electrical, mechanical, and deep foundation systems, has been working closely with environmental groups on the interchange proposal to assure success with minimum disruption to the local habitats. To complete this delicate foundation work for the Mass Pike, J.F White wisely chose to partner with International Construction Equipment, Inc (ICE®) for their equipment needs. Several pieces of pile driving equipment are being used, including an ICE® IP-7 Hydraulic Impact Hammer paired with an ICE® 48 Off-Shore Leader, two ICE® 44E Vibratory Hammers, an ICE® 28D Vibratory Hammer, and an ICE® I-46 Diesel Impact Hammer. With all the powerful pile driving equipment on hand, this project has continued to remain on time and on budget, along with maintaining environmental standards. Soon, due to the diligent work of the J.F. White crews, the interchange that serves on an average day, over 100,000 vehicles and 75,000 thousand will be able to keep up with the high volume of traffic due for an upgrade for years.

The updated Mass Pike is scheduled to be completed in 2027. J.F. White has done an excellent job staying on pace with this project so that Massachusettsans can commute safely and effectively. International Construction Equipment, Inc (ICE®) has genuinely enjoyed being a part of such a large state project and is looking forward to working on this and many more with J.F. White in the future. Awesome work J.F. White!

Green “Monster” at the Lake

The town of Oakville was founded in 1820 to build a marina community on Lake Ontario for shipbuilding and the shipping industry. Since then, the community has grown while honoring the early development days. Oakville's waterfront on Lake Ontario features beautiful scenery with two natural harbors, and a system of river trails that run through it. Featuring wooded areas, meadows, museums and formal gardens, there is plenty to see and do along the waterfront. During the summer months many events and activities are available, and the harbor accommodates many boating options. The river not only provides great hiking for all skill levels, but it is also a great place to fish. It is also the perfect habitat for brook, brown and rainbow trout, and you can also spot chinook salmon, smallmouth bass, panfish and carp. People have even sighted a legendary lake monster in the area including famous French explorer, Jacques Cartier the first European to navigate the St. Lawerence River. He claimed to have spotted the creature that the native Seneca called Gaasyendietha, now called Kingstie, in 1534.

Today, in the same area, you can spot a new ICE® 33 Vibratory Driver/Extractor installing a seawall. The ICE® 33, with its patented Dual-Pull™ Suppressor provides maximum vibration isolation during driving and is being utilized to guide the 35' (Ft) steel sheets firmly to bedrock. Keep your eyes peeled for both Kingstie and the vibrant green of the ICE® 33 Hammer! International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) is excited to be a part of the strengthening of this areas seawall and wishes everyone the best of luck in spotting the ICE® 33 and the ever-elusive Kingstie!

44VM Promotes Safer Petroleum

The Perth Amboy Refinery was built in 1920 by the Barber Asphalt Company. Located between Convery Boulevard and State Street in Perth Amboy, NJ, the refinery contains over 100 years of history. In 1945, Chevron Corporation bought the plant from Barber Asphalt and started producing more products such as gasoline and heating oil.  For the next 29 years Chevron would continue to expand and ended up with a refining capacity of 80,000 barrels in 2008. Chevron sold its operations to Buckeye Partners, who still own it and produce multiple petroleum products.

Buckeye Partners just completed some dock repairs which were completed by K-T Marine, Inc. K-T Marine, Inc. was founded in 1978 and performs large contract work and routine maintenance dock building for terminals, marinas and other waterfront property owners throughout New Jersey, New York, and eastern Pennsylvania. The dock repair required some 50'(ft) H- Beams and pipe piles to be driven into the bedrock to create a safer and more secure dock. K-T Marine partnered with International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) using a rented ICE® 44VM Variable Moment Hammer to get this job completed. The ICE®44VM model was needed due to the sensitive surroundings and features of the dock. It includes a 4,070 pound (about 1846.12 kg) non vibrating weight which reduces the vibration as piles are being inserted into the ground. K-T Marine made a fantastic selection of equipment based on the susceptible environment. ICE®44VM passed all the tests of the vibration monitors and did a great job repairing the dock.

The oil and gas industry plays an influential role in the global economy as the world's primary fuel sources. Thanks to KT- Marine, Buckeye Partners can continue producing petroleum products that serve the globe more safely. International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) are very pleased to have been part of this dock repair and look forward to working again with K-T Marine, Inc. in the future.

40 Years of Serv-ICE®! Congratulations, Brian Durfee!

Brian Durfee is celebrating 40 years working in the Service Department with International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®).  Born in Elmira, NY and then transplanted to Mississippi as a young man. Shortly after his high school graduation, Brian decided to move to Louisiana and got a job working on air hammers at CONMACO Inc. just down the road from the ICE® Belle Chasse Branch location. While at CONMACO, Mr. Durfee met Dennis Gigoux, who helped direct his interest in doing service work. A few years later, in January 1984, he met Bill Spatz and soon found himself working out in the ICE® yard doing things like washing bolts and learning how to put the equipment together. Jumping headfirst into his role, Brian was a sponge, learning about foundation equipment and how it was used, how to operate the crane and how to build and service the various equipment.  During his 40 years with ICE®, Mr. Durfee has learned just about every facet of the field from Parts to Service and everything in between; stating that he "still strives to learn something new every day".

As the Branch Service Manager for ICE® Belle Chasse, Brian has hired and trained pretty much everyone that has come through the service team in Louisiana, including Michael Gregory, Regional Sales & Service Manager almost 20 years ago. Mr. Gregory has the utmost respect for his former leader and stated that he "couldn't have asked for a better boss, mentor or leader as a young man coming into this industry". The years they spent working together have carried Michael through all the challenges he has seen throughout his career, and he knows that if he (or anyone else) gets in a bind, Mr. Durfee will be there to help.  Brian describes his role as Branch Manager as "very rewarding" and takes pride in the fact that his branch runs like a well-oiled machine. He works hard, appreciates others who do so and strongly feels that the trades are the backbone of our country. He is immensely proud to be a part of something so monumental and important. Advice to those starting out in the industry, "Never give up, don't quit, don't stop trying. Learn as much as you can and apply what you learn".

When discussing the biggest challenges he has faced during his time with ICE®, Brian mentioned that working and living during and after Hurricane Katrina was certainly the most difficult both personally and professionally. Not only was the branch devastated and standing under 7' (ft) of water, but he also lost his entire service team. His home, the homes of the rest of the ICE® team and the entire community in general were annihilated. Mr. Durfee is very appreciative and grateful of his entire branch and how they were all able to push through and make it through that shared event, stating he was "thankful for his ICE® family and the community."

Being a good role model and setting a good example are things he prides himself on, and Mr. Durfee exercises this role as both a manager and father. Brian has two adult daughters who are his pride and joy and is happily married to his wife, Anna Marie.  Once he retires, he would like to travel the United States in his RV and spend time with his wife, their combined five children and seven grandchildren.

International Construction Equipment, Inc. is grateful for the dedication and perseverance Brian Durfee has shown in his 40 years with our team. Congratulations Brian and Geaux, ICE®!
